The same state that defunded its police and made it harder for law-abiding citizens to exercise their 2A rights is now coming for self-defense laws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assembly Bill 1333, if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everytown.org\/press\/fact-sheet-ab-1333-is-life-saving-legislation-aimed-at-preventing-those-who-shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later\/#:~:text=AB%201333%20is%20an%20anti,standards%20used%20in%20other%20states.\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-bill-guts-self-defense-rights\" title=\"California Bill Guts Self-Defense Rights\">passed<\/a>, would severely limit when residents can use lethal force to protect themselves or others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse yet, it introduces an absolute duty to retreat when outside the home\u2014essentially forcing people to flee rather than defend their own lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The State That Wants to Ban Self Defense\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/73JYzA5NmgA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-california-ab-1333-does\">What California AB 1333 Does<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under California\u2019s current law (Penal Code Section 197), lethal force is justified when someone is facing imminent danger of death, serious bodily injury, or a felony being committed against them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But AB 1333 seeks to strip away those protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-key-changes\">The Key Changes:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Limits Self-Defense Situations:<\/strong> The bill removes the provision allowing the use of lethal force when a felony (such as robbery, carjacking, or <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/armed-teacher-saves-young-girl-from-sexual-assault\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-bill-guts-self-defense-rights\" title=\"California Bill Guts Self-Defense Rights\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2527\">sexual assault<\/a>) is being committed against the victim. This means prosecutors could argue that defending yourself during a <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/lott-was-right-fbi-revises-violent-crime-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-bill-guts-self-defense-rights\" title=\"California Bill Guts Self-Defense Rights\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2526\">violent crime<\/a> isn\u2019t justified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weakens Home Defense:<\/strong> While current law allows you to use lethal force against a home intruder, AB 1333 waters this down, making it more difficult to defend yourself even in your own home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Creates a Duty to Retreat:<\/strong> If you\u2019re outside your residence, you must try to escape before using force, even if facing immediate danger. This directly contradicts the long-standing stand-your-ground principle recognized in many states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bans Certain Justifications for Lethal Force:<\/strong> The bill explicitly eliminates the right to use lethal force to apprehend a felon, suppress a riot, or protect public safety in certain scenarios.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-this-means-for-californians\">What This Means for Californians<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This bill would put law-abiding citizens in even greater danger. A population that\u2019s completely defenseless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William Kirk of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtongunlaw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"california-bill-guts-self-defense-rights\" title=\"California Bill Guts Self-Defense Rights\">Washington Gun Law<\/a><\/em> has been raising awareness about this dangerous bill (see video above), highlighting just how drastically it would limit a person\u2019s ability to protect themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-you-can-do\">What You Can Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a California resident, contact your legislators and oppose AB 1333 before it\u2019s too late.
