And guess what? At the time of the Founding, 18-year-olds were considered part of the militia, and they had the right to keep and bear arms. So this modern-age restriction? Unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling follows similar trends across the country, where courts are recognizing that age-based gun bans don\u2019t hold up under historical scrutiny. If the Founders trusted 18-year-olds with muskets to defend the nation, today\u2019s young adults should be trusted with modern <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/firearms\/handguns\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fifth-circuit-smacks-down-age-based-handgun-ban\" title=\"Fifth Circuit Smacks Down Age-Based Handgun Ban\">handguns<\/a> for self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-government-s-weak-assertion\"><strong>The Government\u2019s Weak Assertion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal government tried to justify the ban by arguing that young adults are more impulsive and prone to crime. That\u2019s the same tired <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sen-tammy-duckworth-gun-control-talking-points-in-everytown-veepstakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fifth-circuit-smacks-down-age-based-handgun-ban\" title=\"Fifth Circuit Smacks Down Age-Based Handgun Ban\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2797\">talking point gun control<\/a> advocates always throw out when they\u2019re losing an argument. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the court wasn\u2019t buying it. They pointed out that rights aren\u2019t doled out based on arbitrary assumptions about maturity. If 18-year-olds are mature enough to fight for their country, they\u2019re mature enough to exercise their Second Amendment rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-this-means-for-gun-owners\"><strong>What This Means for Gun Owners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This ruling doesn\u2019t just affect 18- to 20-year-olds\u2014it strengthens the Second Amendment for everyone. It sets a precedent that gun rights don\u2019t disappear based on arbitrary government restrictions. With over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/update-make-that-26-million-new-first-time-gun-owners-since-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"fifth-circuit-smacks-down-age-based-handgun-ban\" title=\"Fifth Circuit Smacks Down Age-Based Handgun Ban\">26 million new gun owners since 2020<\/a>, a significant number of them are young adults who refuse to be disarmed. The Fifth Circuit just reinforced their right to legally purchase the tools they need to protect themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-important-note\"><strong>Important Note<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While this ruling is a big win, it\u2019s not the final word just yet.
