{"id":211385,"date":"2025-01-08T06:17:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-08T12:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=211385"},"modified":"2026-02-05T10:25:39","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T16:25:39","slug":"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By Larry Keane<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new year is starting off right away with great news in New Jersey and it\u2019s something all Americans \u2013 especially outdoorsmen and women conservationists, hunters and recreational target shooters \u2013 can and should celebrate, not just in the Garden State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bald eagle population has rebounded from the brink so much in New Jersey that the state\u2019s department of environmental protection&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dep.nj.gov\/newsrel\/25_0002\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\">announced<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;it was removing the raptor from the state\u2019s own protected endangered species list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe status of the bald eagle has changed from endangered to special concern\u2026based on determinations by New Jersey DEP (NJDEP) Fish &amp; Wildlife that the populations of these birds have recovered to the point at which their survival in the state is no longer in jeopardy,\u201d the announcement&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dep.nj.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/rules\/adopt-20250106a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\">stated<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Inside the \u2018incredible journey\u2019 to make the bald eagle the official U.S. national bird\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_M4sqy__9PI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The welcomed announcement in New Jersey overlaps with a tremendous effort by sportsmen and women over the past year, during which firearm and ammunition manufacturers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/firearm-industry-surpasses-17-billion-in-pittman-robertson-excise-tax-contributions-for-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"><strong>topped $17 billion<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in excise tax contributions to the Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund since its inception in 1937. When adjusted for inflation, the total is&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/firearm-industry-surpasses-17-billion-in-pittman-robertson-excise-tax-contributions-for-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\">more than $27.38 billion<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-returning-from-the-brink\">Returning From the Brink<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The rise of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-michigan-bald-eagle-comeback\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3338\">bald eagle<\/a> population is truly astounding. In the 1970s and into the 1980s, there was only a single \u2013 one \u2013 bald eagle nesting pair in New Jersey. Reintroduction of bald eagles from Canada and artificial incubation and fostering efforts began to show tremendous success during the 1990s and active bald eagle nests surpassed 100 for the first time in decades, reaching to 119, in 2012. A decade later, the total more than doubled to 250. In 2024, New Jersey celebrated a record 293 nesting pairs, of which 264 laid eggs, according to the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dep.nj.gov\/newsrel\/25_0002\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\">announcement<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis action is indeed a significant milestone in the history of endangered species conservation and recovery in New Jersey and is the result of the passion and commitment of many people over the past 40-plus years to restore wildlife that were on the brink of extirpation in New Jersey,\u201d said NJDEP Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe removal of the bald eagle and osprey from New Jersey\u2019s endangered species list is a remarkable accomplishment, made possible by the tireless efforts of our dedicated wildlife professionals,\u201d added NJDEP Fish &amp; Wildlife Assistant Commissioner Dave Golden. \u201cThe key to this success is a commitment to science, planning, and strong lines of communication with the public and stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-national-success\">National Success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>New Jersey isn\u2019t the only state seeing signs of the remarkable recovery of the bald eagle. Populations are literally soaring across the country, from coast to coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2021 Axios report highlighted the raptor\u2019s recovery since the low point in population 45 years ago. In just the past 15 years, populations of the American bald eagle have quadrupled since 2009 when there were only around 72,000 in the lower 48 states, Axios&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2021\/03\/27\/americas-bald-eagle-population-quadruple\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\">reported<\/a>.<\/strong>&nbsp;That report was based off new data on the bald eagle released by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) showing then (2021) there were an estimated 316,700 individual bald eagles and more than 71,400 breeding pairs in the lower 48 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/local-journalism-ignores-facts-pushes-anti-hunting-activism\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\">praised the bald eagles\u2019 return<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;in the announcement, saying, \u201cThe recovery of the bald eagle is one of the most well-known conservation success stories of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the 2021 data, even more recent positive news about bald eagle recovery, in addition to New Jersey\u2019s announcement, can easily be found. Eagle populations in&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/story\/5626919\/bald-eagle-population-arizona-grows\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\">Arizona<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;reached record highs last month with 104 breeding pairs in the state. Delaware also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dnrec.delaware.gov\/outdoor-delaware\/bald-eagles-soar-in-delaware-as-survey-reveals-population-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"><strong>announced 121 active<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>bald eagle nests<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;over the summer, a dramatic increase from just four active nests in the entire state in 1987. Both&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/2024\/07\/03\/ohio-bald-eagle-population-july-fourth\/74277237007\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"><strong>Ohio<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/story\/news\/2024\/07\/03\/bald-eagle-population-thrives-ahead-of-july-fourth\/74289165007\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"><strong>Kentucky<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;announced bald eagle populations were reaching new heights over the summer, just in time for the Fourth of July celebrations in those states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All this good news regarding healthy and thriving bald eagle populations couldn\u2019t come at a better time. The White House announced on Christmas Eve that President Joe Biden signed a bill officially&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/its-official-biden-signs-new-law-designates-bald-eagle-national-bird\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"><strong>designating the bald eagle as the national bird<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;after Congress unanimously passed the legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-fall-for-false-media\">Don\u2019t Fall for False Media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the undeniable science and results pointing out to the bald eagle\u2019s remarkable recovery across the United States, it\u2019s become common practice for anti-hunting, antigun media outlets to run&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/local-new-coverage-of-bald-eagles-misses-successes-by-shaming-hunters\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\">\u201cscare stories\u201d<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;attempting to pluck at emotional heartstrings and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/local-journalism-ignores-facts-pushes-anti-hunting-activism\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"><strong>blame hunters for the<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>occasional bald eagle death<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;attributing it to traditional lead-based ammunition. The stories are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/academic-research-media-suggests-hunters-poisoning-bald-eagles\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"><strong>far too common<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and lack any basic understanding of wildlife biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is actually going on is successful science-based conservation and wildlife management, funded by hunters and outdoorsmen and women \u2013 America\u2019s original conservationists. Millions of these men and women support the firearm and ammunition industry which pays the Pittman-Robertson excise taxes that go into the Wildlife Restoration <a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/xdm-osp-4-5-custom-shop-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-jersey-bald-eagle-announcement-reason-for-conservation-celebration\" title=\"New Jersey Bald Eagle Announcement Reason for Conservation Celebration\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3337\">Trust Fund<\/a> and get distributed back to the states for wildlife conservation and management projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Created in 1937, firearm and ammunition manufacturers have contributed over $27.38 billion in inflation-adjusted dollars.
