The 43-year-old homeowner grappled with a woman holding a knife.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officer Alexander Bookman entered the home, and saw the fight, yelling, \u201cDrop the knife! Drop the knife!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within seconds of entering the home, Bookman fired his gun. <em>CNN<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/18\/us\/las-vegas-police-shoot-911-caller\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"las-vegas-cop-shoots-victim-not-attacker-during-knife-fight\" title=\"Las Vegas Cop Shoots Victim (Not Attacker) During Knife Fight\">reports<\/a> that the first bullet hit Durham. Bookman fired five more times, each time hitting Durham, not the attacker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police took the suspect, Alejandra Boudreaux, into custody. Durham on the other hand, died on the scene from the gunshot wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-police-perspective\">Police Perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren of the LVMPD released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvmpd.com\/Home\/Components\/News\/News\/1478\/263\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"las-vegas-cop-shoots-victim-not-attacker-during-knife-fight\" title=\"Las Vegas Cop Shoots Victim (Not Attacker) During Knife Fight\">press statement<\/a> after the shooting. In his 911 call, Durham stated that several people were trying to break in and were shooting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durham told police he and his 15-year-old daughter Isabella were home. They planned to lock themselves in the bathroom until help came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When officers arrived, they \u201cobserved damage to the house and could hear screaming coming from inside the residence,\u201d according to Koren. \u201cBased on the circumstances, Officer Bookman kicked in the front door.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-family-perspective\">Family Perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/11\/18\/brandon-durham-las-vegas-police\/76401735007\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"las-vegas-cop-shoots-victim-not-attacker-during-knife-fight\" title=\"Las Vegas Cop Shoots Victim (Not Attacker) During Knife Fight\"><em>USAToday<\/em><\/a>, Bookman is on administrative leave. David Roger, an attorney in connection with the LVMPD counters that demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCriminal cases require proof of a person\u2019s criminal intent,\u201d Roger told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/18\/us\/las-vegas-police-shoot-911-caller\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"las-vegas-cop-shoots-victim-not-attacker-during-knife-fight\" title=\"Las Vegas Cop Shoots Victim (Not Attacker) During Knife Fight\"><em>CNN<\/em><\/a>, \u201cWhile Mr. Durham\u2019s death is tragic, Officer Bookman was doing his job and did not intend to commit a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-original-attacker\">The Original Attacker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Boudreaux on the other hand, had very clear intentions. She told police she entered the home in a suicidal state, wanting to be shot by police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 31-year-old woman met Durham previously through their real estate work. The two developed an intimate relationship, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5vegas.com\/2024\/11\/19\/suspect-las-vegas-home-invasion-said-cops-killed-wrong-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"las-vegas-cop-shoots-victim-not-attacker-during-knife-fight\" title=\"Las Vegas Cop Shoots Victim (Not Attacker) During Knife Fight\">Fox5<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, Boudreaux called Durham out on his other relationships and he told her to leave his home.
