Kirk explained, \u201cThe minute that injunction is stayed, you are actually in violation of the Protect Illinois Communities Act.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-defiant-stand-illinois-assault-weapon-registration-sees-low-turnout\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/defiant-stand-illinois-assault-weapon-registration-sees-low-turnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"this-state-may-let-you-buy-it-legally-but-not-own-it-legally\" title=\"This State May Let You Buy It Legally, But Not Own It Legally?\">Defiant Stand: Illinois\u2019 \u2018Assault Weapon\u2019 Registration Sees Low Turnout<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasized the legal trap residents could face: if they bought a firearm during an injunction, the law would still require them to swear under penalty of perjury that they owned it before January 10, a clear legal dilemma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cObviously, you cannot sign that under penalty of perjury if you came into possession of it even though you came into possession of it lawfully sometime in October or November of 2024,\u201d Kirk noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirk predicts a cycle of \u201cwin, stay, appeal\u201d for the Illinois cases, expecting injunctions to be brief and subject to rapid reversal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Should a gun owner lawfully obtain a firearm in this window, Kirk said, \u201cIllinois may let you buy it legally but not own it legally,\u201d underscoring the state\u2019s complex restrictions and legal ambiguities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compliance is another challenge for the state, with only an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/defiant-stand-illinois-assault-weapon-registration-sees-low-turnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"this-state-may-let-you-buy-it-legally-but-not-own-it-legally\" title=\"This State May Let You Buy It Legally, But Not Own It Legally?\">estimated<\/a> 1-11% of Illinois gun owners reportedly registering their firearms, despite Governor J.B.
