A security camera alerted the homeowner, waking him up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Homeowner shoots at two suspected vehicle burglars, injures 1, SAPD says\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Xmp0S3EEKE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ak-versus-car-burglars\">AK Versus Car Burglars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/10\/08\/homeowner-alerted-by-security-system-shoots-at-two-suspected-vehicle-burglars-sapd-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"san-antonio-homeowner-shoots-suspected-car-burglars-with-ak\" title=\"San Antonio Homeowner Shoots Suspected Car Burglars with 'AK'\"><em>KSAT 12<\/em><\/a>, the homeowner armed himself with \u201can AK-style rifle.\u201d His wife also armed herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two entered their apartment complex garage, confronting the burglars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a police report, the homeowner said he saw a firearm on one of the strangers. He fired his gun, shooting one suspect in the back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-suspects\">Suspects <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Police said the two burglars left in a car. Later, someone came into the hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the back. Police believe this might be one of their suspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <em>KSAT 12<\/em>, the suspect has not cooperated with police.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The identities of those involved are not currently public. Police are continuing to investigate. Charges will be announced once the situation is better understood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vehicle-crime-on-the-uptick\">Vehicle Crime On The Uptick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-releases-motor-vehicle-theft-2019-2023\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"san-antonio-homeowner-shoots-suspected-car-burglars-with-ak\" title=\"San Antonio Homeowner Shoots Suspected Car Burglars with 'AK'\">FBI data<\/a>, car theft and vehicle crime have increased in the last few years. Most of these crimes are committed by teens.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the FBI reported 199.4 car crimes per 100,000 people. The number of incidents increased to 283.5 incidents per 100,000 people in 2023. That\u2019s a 40% increase over four years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-defending-a-car\">Defending A Car<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Defense of life and defense of property often fall under different rules. Deadly force, the use of guns, is strongly discouraged in the protection of any property besides a home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, The Castle Doctrine in Texas does provide a loophole that may have just saved our homeowner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/versustexas.com\/blog\/castle-doctrine-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"san-antonio-homeowner-shoots-suspected-car-burglars-with-ak\" title=\"San Antonio Homeowner Shoots Suspected Car Burglars with 'AK'\">VersusTexas.com<\/a>, there are circumstances where you can shoot in defense of your property.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must first happen at night. The homeowner must believe that deadly force (using a gun) is the ONLY way they can retrieve their property. OR they must believe that they will come to harm while protecting their property without the use of that gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-should-the-homeowner-have-shot-the-car-burglars\">Should The Homeowner Have Shot The Car Burglars?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This car burglary happened at night, so that requirement is met. We do not know if the homeowner had any other way to protect his property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the car burglars were armed, the homeowner would believe he was about to be harmed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, we will not know if the courts will agree with this homeowner\u2019s actions until charges are announced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the long run though, shooting over a car burglary is likely to get you in trouble.
