California Gov. Gavin Newsom celebrated this week after signing more gun control bills into law. The governor claims that these new laws will equate to “fewer gun related deaths.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCalifornia won\u2019t wait until the next school shooting or mass shooting to act. In the absence of congressional action, our state is once again leading the way by strengthening our nation-leading gun laws,” said Newsom in a press release<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n “Data shows that California\u2019s gun safety laws are effective in preventing gun-related deaths \u2014 which makes the ongoing inaction and obstruction by politicians in the pocket of the gun lobby even more reprehensible,” he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2705\u00a0PROTECT KIDS FROM GUNS<\/strong>\u00a0by strengthening safe storage requirements and creating stricter penalties for gun owners whose guns are accessed by a child, resulting in death or injury to themselves or others. Strengthens safety measures to protect students during active threats.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2705\u00a0PREVENT GUN-RELATED HATE CRIMES<\/strong>\u00a0by building on California\u2019s red flag laws and creating more training for law enforcement officers and courts to assess and identify extremism and potential for hate-based crimes, allowing more effective use of restraining orders.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2705\u00a0SAFEGUARD VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE<\/strong>\u00a0by creating more training and tools for child custody caseworkers and law enforcement officers to determine whether abusers may have access to guns.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2705\u00a0PROVIDE MORE TOOLS TO KEEP GUNS OUT OF DANGEROUS HANDS<\/strong>\u00a0by restricting animal abusers and persons found incompetent to stand trial from possessing firearms, as well as by strengthening California\u2019s red flag laws.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2705\u00a0INCREASE INFORMATION-SHARING TO CLOSE ENFORCEMENT GAPS\u00a0<\/strong>by making it easier for California courts to ensure that people who are deemed a threat to themselves or others no longer have access to firearms.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course, there is no evidence that gun control reduces crime or gun-related deaths.
