Just the sight of a gun can be enough to stop an attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One striking example involved a woman in Atlanta who scared off robbers by pulling out her gun. Bystanders, in many cases, successfully stop crimes when they use a firearm to defend themselves or others (GunsAmerica highlights at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/tag\/dgu\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-stossel-hollywoods-gun-myths-vs-real-life-armed-defense\" title=\"John Stossel: Hollywood's Gun Myths vs. Real-Life Armed Defense\">least one story every week<\/a>!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why do TV shows and movies continue to push the idea that &#8220;a good guy with a gun&#8221; can&#8217;t stop crime? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out, anti-gun groups have been <a href=\"https:\/\/everytownsupportfund.org\/initiatives\/cultural-and-entertainment-advocacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-stossel-hollywoods-gun-myths-vs-real-life-armed-defense\" title=\"John Stossel: Hollywood's Gun Myths vs. Real-Life Armed Defense\">working<\/a> with Hollywood. These groups proudly boast about their \u201cpartnership with Hollywood\u201d and influence over scripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FBI, too, plays a part in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/major-errors-in-fbis-active-shooter-report-perpetuates-narrative-that-good-guys-w-guns-dont-stop-bad-guys-with-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-stossel-hollywoods-gun-myths-vs-real-life-armed-defense\" title=\"John Stossel: Hollywood's Gun Myths vs. Real-Life Armed Defense\">downplaying<\/a> these successful self-defense stories. They claim that armed civilians rarely stop shootings. However, their data doesn\u2019t include many cases where they actually do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One clear example occurred right after the Pulse nightclub shooting. It happened in South Carolina, just a week later, and it ended very differently when a civilian shot the gunman. That incident received hardly any national coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-chicago-mom-shoots-man-reaching-into-daughter-s-window\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/chicago-mother-shoots-man-in-her-daughters-window\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-stossel-hollywoods-gun-myths-vs-real-life-armed-defense\" title=\"John Stossel: Hollywood's Gun Myths vs. Real-Life Armed Defense\">Chicago Mom Shoots Man Reaching Into Daughter\u2019s Window<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2018\/aug\/6\/concealed-carrier-takes-down-gunman-florida-peace-\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-stossel-hollywoods-gun-myths-vs-real-life-armed-defense\" title=\"John Stossel: Hollywood's Gun Myths vs. Real-Life Armed Defense\">incident<\/a> in Titusville, Florida, where a man fired a gun near a school event. A concealed carry holder shot him before anyone was killed. The local media covered it, but it didn\u2019t make national news, and once again, the FBI missed the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stossel points out that many successful self-defense stories, like those listed by <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-stossel-hollywoods-gun-myths-vs-real-life-armed-defense\" title=\"John Stossel: Hollywood's Gun Myths vs. Real-Life Armed Defense\">CrimeResearch.Org<\/a>, go unnoticed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One chilling example involved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hero-stopped-mass-shooting-but-mainstream-media-never-covered-the-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-stossel-hollywoods-gun-myths-vs-real-life-armed-defense\" title=\"John Stossel: Hollywood's Gun Myths vs. Real-Life Armed Defense\">Raul Mendez<\/a>, who was shot in the head at a party but still managed to stop the attacker by shooting him. Mendez believes he saved a dozen lives that day, including his own family\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, the FBI didn\u2019t record his case either. Stossel correctly asserts that political bias plays a role, with some people in the FBI hesitant to report data that doesn\u2019t fit the anti-gun narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to Stossel\u2019s questioning, the FBI stated that their data is &#8220;not intended to explore all active shooter incidents.&#8221; Essentially, they admit their data is incomplete, but you wouldn\u2019t know that from watching the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the media\u2019s insistence that civilian self-defense with guns is rare, the facts show otherwise. Gun bans may sound appealing to the uninformed, but they mostly disarm law-abiding citizens, not criminals. In places where guns are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/lott-vs-gun-control-advocates-a-1000-bet-on-brazils-crime-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"john-stossel-hollywoods-gun-myths-vs-real-life-armed-defense\" title=\"John Stossel: Hollywood's Gun Myths vs. Real-Life Armed Defense\">banned<\/a>, murder rates tend to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, armed civilians are stopping crimes more often than we\u2019re led to believe.
