A homeowner in Kent, Washington, shot a burglary suspect earlier this week after waking to find the man standing in his bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It happened at 1:27 a.m. according to the Kent Police Department<\/a>. They received a 911 call reporting a burglary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe 911 caller stated that he had shot at a male who was burglarizing his home, and he was unsure if he had hit the suspect,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When speaking to the news, the 34-year-old homeowner asked to be left unidentified. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burglar In the Bedroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The homeowner woke when the perp turned on the light in his bedroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was quick. I woke up, and there was this giant standing in my bedroom,” he told KOMO<\/em><\/a>. The homeowner said he began grabbing things from his nightstand to throw at the intruder.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think that helped,\u201d the homeowner said, \u201cto push him out of the door, and I had just enough time to run for my safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The homeowner shot two rounds at the suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not Alone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The others present in his house made the stakes higher for this homeowner. He said his brother and sister-in-law were visiting from out of town. Together with his daughter, there were five children there that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s terrifying,\u201d the homeowner\u2019s brother told KIRO7<\/em><\/a>. \u201cNo one is expecting to come into your house, especially at night but like at any time when you\u2019re asleep and it\u2019s shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The homeowner expressed disbelief that he had to shoot. \u201cYou hear stories, and you never think it\u2019s gonna be you until it\u2019s you. Until it\u2019s your family,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he also stated he would repeat his actions if needed. \u201cThis is my safe house. This is my home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once on the scene, police found several items the bedroom burglary suspect had allegedly stolen from the home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The homeowner told police he did not know if the man was armed. The homeowner had a CPL and a legally owned firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bedroom Burglar Himself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Later, around 3 a.m. police received a report of a man with a gunshot wound. They arrived at the apartment building and concluded it was likely the suspect.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 39-year-old burglary suspect had a gunshot wound to the chest. Police treated him on the scene with assistance from the fire department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wounded individual was taken to a hospital. He has not been charged yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope he gets what he deserves,\u2019 The homeowner\u2019s brother said, \u201cand I hope in the future, no one else gets that courage to go to someone\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harsh Reality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, this family in Kent is not unique in having experienced something like this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the FBI<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0 an estimated minimum of 1 million homes each year are burglarized in the USA. Sure, 1 million is better than 2 million, but it\u2019s way worse than none.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your chances of having your home, or bedroom, broken into change depending on your location. But the chance still exists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the homeowner said, he heard the stories but never expected it to be his home. That\u2019s probably true of just about everyone who has their home broken into. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t be caught off guard by something that has such severe implications. This homeowner had a gun and the legal prerequisites to shoot it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a suspect showed up in his bedroom, the homeowner was able to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He defended his family and his home. Wouldn\u2019t you like to do the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
