They reported getting a 911 call on Saturday around 2:30 pm. The caller reported a burglary in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The homeowner reported that \u201csomeone had kicked in this back door.\u201d He confronted the suspect and eventually \u201cwas forced to defend himself using a handgun.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police arrived at the scene and the homeowner showed them the suspect. Police identified the suspect as Jason L Vermillion, a 42-year-old man. They found him in critical condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-aftermath\">Aftermath<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOfficers immediately began life-saving measures,\u201d according to their report. They took Vermillion to St Francis Medical Center. The suspect died there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to police, they initially treated the scene as a homicide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/wex\/homicide\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"missouri-homeowner-fatally-shoots-burglar-receives-no-charges\" title=\"Missouri Homeowner Fatally Shoots Burglar, Receives No Charges\u00a0\">homicide<\/a> is any death of one person caused by another person. Technically, every time someone shoots another person in self-defense it is homicide.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">the investigation,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usacarry.com\/missouri-homeowner-shoots-and-kills-intruder-during-burglary-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"missouri-homeowner-fatally-shoots-burglar-receives-no-charges\" title=\"Missouri Homeowner Fatally Shoots Burglar, Receives No Charges\u00a0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>USA Carry<\/em><\/a>\u00a0reported that\u00a0<\/span>the police deemed the case a self-defense incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt this time, we are not seeking charges on the homeowner;\u201d Chief Christopher M Griggs of the SCPD said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the efforts of the officers as they thoroughly investigated the scene, the homeowner was acting in self-defense and was protecting himself and his property,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-the-homeowner-did-right\">What The Homeowner Did Right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This story is an excellent example of what to do after acting in self-defense.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-let-s-go-through-what-the-homeowner-did-right\">Let\u2019s go through what the homeowner did right:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>-First off, he shot in self-defense. So it was a justifiable shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-As soon as he was safe, he called the police and reported what had happened. He clearly stated what had happened from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-When police arrived, he cooperated and helped the police complete their investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-you-shouldn-t-do-in-this-situation\">What you shouldn\u2019t do in this situation:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>-Don&#8217;t shoot when it isn\u2019t the last resort. Several criteria must be met for a shooting to be in self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Don&#8217;t lie to the police or hide information. You didn\u2019t do anything wrong by defending yourself, but be respectful while the police investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dealing with police can be intimidating.
