Tragically, nine of the victims died from their injuries. Just two weeks ago, Chicagoans survived a weekend that saw at least&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/post\/chicago-shootings-weekend-least-45-shot-8-fatally\/14931086\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\"><strong>44 people shot<\/strong><\/a>. Tragically, at least eight of the victims died from their injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a city where criminals know they can get away with violence and criminal shootings \u2013&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/chicago-pols-play-crime-blame-game-residents-protecting-themselves\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\">even when police are involved<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 it\u2019s not surprising that law-abiding Chicagoans would consider arming themselves and, God-forbid, having to use their firearm for self-defense or to protect their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s just too much for The Chicago Tribune editorial board. The media masters there went out and did the most editorial board thing possible and decried such a trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorryingly, we\u2019re seeing more signs of that phenomenon in Chicago, with three separate episodes over the last weekend in which would-be victims proved to be both armed and willing to fire at their assailants,\u201d the board chose to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must be nice to live in such an Ivory Tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents\"><h2>Table of contents<\/h2><ul><li><a href=\"#h-is-anyone-there\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\" data-level=\"2\">Is Anyone There?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-surely-not\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\" data-level=\"2\">Surely Not!<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-nssf-standing-for-illinoisans\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\" data-level=\"2\">NSSF Standing for Illinoisans<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-danger-ahead\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\" data-level=\"2\">Danger Ahead<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-anyone-there\">Is Anyone There?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So far in 2024, the crime situation in Chicago is so bad residents are relying on themselves for safety. In fact, according to NSSF-adjusted NICS data, nearly 200,000 Illinoisans have purchased a firearm during the first five months of the year alone, including in Chicago. They have no other choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police and law enforcement have been hamstrung by \u201cdefund the police\u201d politicians who cut budgets in recent years, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/adamandrzejewski\/2021\/07\/20\/democratic-mayors-defunded-their-police-while-spending-millions-on-their-own-police-protection\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\"><strong>400 police officer positions that were eliminated<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in 2020. Even if any would-be victims in the Windy City called 911 for help, there\u2019s a better than even chance their call won\u2019t be answered. More than 50 percent of high-priority calls to emergency dispatchers go unanswered, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bubba.news\/p\/june12\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\"><strong>recent reports<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So as crime remains a serious concern for Chicago residents, they\u2019ve turned to legally purchasing a firearm. As a competitive shooter and past History Channel &#8220;Top Shot&#8221; champion, Chris Cheng\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/since-2020-election-new-gun-owners-equal-population-of-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\">told<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0U.S. Senators during a 2021 congressional hearing, \u201cIf I can\u2019t have law enforcement there, then it is a rational conclusion that individual citizens like myself would opt to utilize my Second Amendment right to purchase a firearm and use that firearm in lawful and legal self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cue the Chicago Tribune\u2019s disapproval of that notion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-surely-not\">Surely Not!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tribune\u2019s enlightened ones decried that Chicagoans have had it with the criminals running the city and are now standing their ground. They referenced four criminals who police said were attacking the lawful gun owners and were shot and wounded, all of them critically,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/06\/06\/editorial-guns-chicago-concealed-carry-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\">according<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;to a report. One would-be victim shot three criminals who were attacking him and another shot a man who was breaking into his home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing more of these cases\u2026 But the majority of Chicagoans, we\u2019re convinced, don\u2019t feel any safer when they read stories of good-guy-with-a-gun responses to street crime\u2026 Overall, it\u2019s not a healthy environment in a city \u2014 where by definition people live close together \u2014 when gun-packing citizens become more the norm than the exception.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They even recognized that the \u201cdefund the police\u201d effort has decimated the city. \u201cSurely, it doesn\u2019t help the narrative, either, when the Chicago Police Department has more than 1,000 openings for officers that it\u2019s struggling to fill,\u201d the newspaper\u2019s editorial board wrote. \u201cSurely, our public officials\u2026can agree that the growing risks of more ordinary citizens taking responsibility for their own safety at the point of a gun isn\u2019t a healthy development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, if law enforcement can\u2019t be the ones to provide basic public safety to keep Chicagoans safe, what do they expect city residents to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nssf-standing-for-illinoisans\">NSSF Standing for Illinoisans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding the editors\u2019 question about \u201cagreeing\u201d that ordinary citizens possessing and using firearms \u201cisn\u2019t a healthy development,\u201d NSSF disagrees. It is a natural right to defend oneself against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. Using a firearm in a bona fide self-defense situation is lawful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If criminals are going to continue illegally obtaining and using guns to commit acts of violence against law-abiding citizens and law enforcement has been reduced to the point of being unable to adequately provide for the safety of communities, then more law-abiding citizens possessing firearms and getting trained to responsibly use them in self-defense is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why NSSF&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-petitions-scotus-to-overturn-illinois-ban-on-semiautomatic-firearms-standard-magazines\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\">petitioned<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;the U.S. Supreme Court in&nbsp;<em>Barnett v. Raoul<\/em>&nbsp;to consider the Constitutionality of Illinois\u2019 ban on commonly-owned firearms and standard-capacity magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the Protect Illinois Communities Act in January 2023, and it is among the nation\u2019s most expansive gun control laws. It bans the sale and possession of over 1,000 models of rifles, including commonly owned MSRs \u2013 of which there are more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-petitions-scotus-to-overturn-illinois-ban-on-semiautomatic-firearms-standard-magazines\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\"><strong>28.1 million<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in circulation since 1990 \u2013 and certain semiautomatic handguns and shotguns as well as rifle magazines with a capacity greater than 10 cartridges and pistol magazines with a capacity greater than 15 cartridges. NSSF&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/nssf-petitions-scotus-to-overturn-illinois-ban-on-semiautomatic-firearms-standard-magazines\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\">challenged<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;the law within days of the governor signing the bill into law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSSF argues that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit previously erred in upholding the state\u2019s ban, which blatantly violates the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Bruen<\/em>&nbsp;decision chastised states that would reduce Second Amendment rights to a state-government privilege granted by bureaucrats and the&nbsp;<em>Bruen<\/em>&nbsp;decision\u2019s \u201chistory and tradition\u201d test rejected state attempts to inject \u201cinterest-balancing\u201d tests. Previously, states and courts would justify gun control laws by placing a thumb on the scale to rationalize infringing on rights protected from infringement by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-danger-ahead\">Danger Ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing law-abiding citizens of Chicago will be closely watching is what happens in their city as the Democratic National Convention draws near. Security officials and convention planners are already voicing concerns about safety issues, even proposing moving some events online as \u201cvirtual.\u201d Prognosticators seem to have a good idea of what lies ahead, especially when looking back at the violence surrounding the Chicago convention of 1968, with POLITICO&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2024\/05\/10\/rookie-mayor-chicago-dnc-00157208\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"chicago-editorial-board-worrifying-that-law-abiding-gun-owners-are-defending-themselves\" title=\"Chicago Editorial Board: 'Worrifying' that Law-Abiding Gun Owners Are Defending Themselves\">writing<\/a>,<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cThe DNC is preparing for the worst in Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s plenty to worry about in The Windy City including how officials are handling community safety and crime.
