Martin Heinrich (D-NM) introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/major-federal-gun-ban-introduced-gosafe-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"major-federal-gun-ban-gains-bicameral-backing\" title=\"Major Federal Gun Ban Gains Bicameral Backing\">GOSAFE Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially known as the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heinrich.senate.gov\/gosafe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"major-federal-gun-ban-gains-bicameral-backing\" title=\"Major Federal Gun Ban Gains Bicameral Backing\"> Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion Act<\/a>, it proposes a sweeping ban on semi-automatic rifles that accept detachable magazines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, it seeks to put all AR and AK platforms on the chopping block. It also aims to outlaw magazines with a capacity over 10 rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, Rep. Lucky McBath (D-GA) brought it to the House for consideration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled that my GOSAFE Act has been introduced in the House by Congresswoman Lucy McBath\u2014 a fierce advocate and leader in the fight to tackle gun violence,\u201d said Heinrich in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heinrich.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/heinrichs-gosafe-act-receives-bicameral-support-introduced-in-the-house-by-representative-lucy-mcbath\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"major-federal-gun-ban-gains-bicameral-backing\" title=\"Major Federal Gun Ban Gains Bicameral Backing\">press release<\/a> obtained by GunsAmerica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI firmly believe we must uphold the laws that protect safe and responsible gun ownership. If enacted, the bill would regulate the sale, transfer, and manufacture of these weapons by:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Establishing a list of prohibited firearms.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Preventing unlawful modifications of permissible firearms.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Mandating that future gas-operated designs are approved before manufacture.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Preventing unlawful firearm self-assembly and manufacturing.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Bloomberg\u2019s minions are applauding the GOSAFE Act&#8217;s reemergence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs weapons of war have become commonplace in America, so has the unfathomable carnage they wreak on our communities,\u201d said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe applaud Representative McBath for introducing innovative legislation that would regulate assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, which are capable of creating devastating destruction in an instant,\u201d Feinblatt continued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe urge Representative McBath\u2019s colleagues to pass this bill before yet another community is forever scarred by someone filled with hate and armed with an AR-15,&#8221; he concluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Press Conference to Announce the GOSAFE ACT\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PtaeE2gpYF8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Heinrich&#8217;s press conference from November 2023. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GunsAmerica reached out to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearms industry trade association, for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNSSF flatly rejected this legislation as clearly unconstitutional when Senator Heinrich introduced it last year and does so again with Representative McBath\u2019s bill,\u201d said Mark Oliva, NSSF\u2019s managing director of public affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-youtube-to-censor-pro-2a-content\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/youtube-to-censor-pro-2a-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"major-federal-gun-ban-gains-bicameral-backing\" title=\"Major Federal Gun Ban Gains Bicameral Backing\">YouTube to Censor Pro-2A Content<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis legislation isn\u2019t just unacceptable; it is openly defiant and hostile to the rights guaranteed to law-abiding citizens through the Bill of Rights,\u201d Oliva continued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliva further argues that the proposed GOSAFE Act is unconstitutional because it attempts to ban an entire class of firearms, which the Supreme Court&#8217;s <em>Heller<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/District_of_Columbia_v._Heller\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"major-federal-gun-ban-gains-bicameral-backing\" title=\"Major Federal Gun Ban Gains Bicameral Backing\">decision<\/a> prohibits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He highlights the long history and widespread ownership of semiautomatic firearms and standard-capacity magazines in the U.S., maintaining that their common use further invalidates the legality of such a ban under existing Supreme Court standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today, there are over 28.1 million MSRs in circulation and at least 717.9 million magazines with a capacity exceeding 10 rounds,&#8221; Oliva observed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed.
