It flows through the gas block, down the gas tube, and into the gas key on the bolt carrier group (BCG) inside the upper receiver. The gas expands inside the carrier and drives it rearward, unlocking the bolt, extracting and ejecting the empty case and cocking the hammer. The buffer and spring then push the BCG forward to chamber the next round. They are rules of thumb, not a standard, and the ranges overlap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pistol length: about 4.5 inches, for barrels under about 10.5 inches<\/li>\n<li>Carbine length: about 7 inches, for barrels from about 10.5 to 18 inches<\/li>\n<li>Mid-length: about 9 inches, for barrels from about 14 to 20 inches<\/li>\n<li>Rifle length: about 12 inches, for barrels of 20 inches and longer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some barrel makers offer in-between lengths. Paul Craddock of Craddock Precision told us his shop offers 14 different gas system lengths, including a Carbine Plus One length built for short suppressed rifles. On an 11.5 inch barrel he reported an average of 3 to 5 percent more velocity compared with the same setup in carbine length. As the military wanted shorter, handier guns, the CAR-15 was developed with a 10 inch barrel and the new, shorter carbine-length system. The current M4 uses a 14.5 inch barrel with a carbine-length gas system. The mid-length system came later as a way to get closer to rifle-length smoothness on barrels too short for rifle gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-gas-length-matters-dwell-time-and-pressure\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Gas Length Matters: Dwell Time and Pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gas system length matters because of dwell time, the amount of time gas keeps pushing on the BCG after the bullet passes the port and before it leaves the muzzle. Barrel length and port location together set how much gas, at what pressure, reaches the carrier and for how long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engineering problem is balance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Too much gas batters the rifle, increases wear and makes recoil sharper.<\/li>\n<li>Too little gas and the rifle will not cycle fully, causing failures to feed or failures to eject.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A port closer to the chamber sees higher pressure, which is why short gas systems tend to feel snappier. That works, but it adds recoil and wear, and it gets worse with a suppressor, which pushes more gas back into the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An adjustable gas block lets you reduce the gas to suit your ammunition or suppressor. One common myth is that it can add gas to an under-gassed rifle. It cannot. The size of the gas port in the barrel sets the maximum, so an adjustable block can only restrict flow.
