New York might become the first state to block the sale of certain pistols — Glocks!<\/em> — unless manufacturers implement measures to prevent them from being converted into machine-gun-like firearms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, a Democrat from Brooklyn, introduced the bill<\/a> because of worries about “Glock switches<\/a>.” These tiny devices can make a regular pistol shoot like a machine gun, firing all the bullets in one go just by holding the trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This bill focuses on pistols that can be modified with Glock switches, mainly Glocks, that are arguably the most popular handguns in America. Sen. Myrie claims Police are concerned about these devices being used in crimes, including shootings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reaction to the proposed bill has been swift and sharp, especially from figures within the firearm industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark Oliva, Managing Director of Public Affairs at the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), criticized the bill as overly broad and potentially damaging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Senator Myrie\u2019s bill is sweeping legislation that has the potential to ban nearly all semiautomatic handguns, particularly striker-fired handguns,” Oliva stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that the bill, influenced by the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention<\/a> and advocacy groups like Everytown, unfairly targets Glock pistols\u2014guns known for their reliability and widely used by law enforcement, including the NYPD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oliva expressed concerns that the legislation does not differentiate between criminal misuse of firearms and lawful ownership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This attack is short-sighted,” he continued. “Senator Myrie is attacking lawful firearm manufacturers and attempting to force them to predict the actions of criminals, which is unreasonable. Instead of focusing on enforcing existing laws and addressing crime directly, this bill could deny law-abiding citizens access to a wide range of firearms.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
