When the assailant pulled a can of mace on 22-year-old Jessica McDonald, a clerk at the store, McDonald pulled a .40 pistol.<\/p>\n<p>Just as rock beats scissors, pistol beats mace. Especially a Springfield Armory XD in .40 S&amp;W.\u00a0The out-gunned assailant, recognizing his predicament, fled on a black bicycle, with McDonald giving chase.<\/p>\n<p>There are several aspects of this incident that are worthy of note. The first, of course, is the positive outcome. For McDonald, the situation ended well. She defended herself with a firearm without ever firing a shot. This is exactly the sort of occurrence the gun grabbers claim never happens. Yet it did. \u201cIt was shocking to me when I started here that there is a gun, and I always thought it was over the top and we didn\u2019t need it,&#8221; McDonald told <a title=\"MCCI News 8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcci.com\/news\/woman-pulls-handgun-on-wouldbe-robber\/26132766\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"iowa-clerk-gets-upperhand-robbery\" title=\"Iowa Clerk Gets Upper Hand in Robbery\" class=\"clickTracking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KCCI News 8<\/a>, &#8220;but I\u2019m very glad that we have it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19855\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kcci-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"iowa-clerk-gets-upperhand-robbery\" title=\"Iowa Clerk Gets Upper Hand in Robbery\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19855\" title=\"Iowa Clerk Gets Upper Hand in Robbery\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kcci-2-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"This is what the robber saw after threatening McDonald with mace.\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kcci-2-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kcci-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/kcci-2.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19855\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is what the robber saw after threatening McDonald with mace.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t her gun.\u00a0That&#8217;s interesting, too.\u00a0The pistol, according to store manager Paul Tigges, had been placed in the safe under the counter for the protection of all of the store&#8217;s employees.<\/p>\n<p>And it was useful.\u00a0When the unidentified man entered the textbook store and approached the counter, he feigned a coughing spell and covered his face with a bandana.\u00a0He then brandished a can of mace. \u00a0\u201cWe were face to face, and then he, like, put the mace right in my face and said, \u2018Give me all the money out of your register,\u2019\u201d McDonald said.\u00a0As the store had just opened, there wasn&#8217;t any cash in the till. The last point, and probably the most important, is what happened next. McDonald didn&#8217;t panic.\u00a0The phone rang, which was all the distraction she needed, and McDonald moved to answer it. As she did, she pulled the gun from the safe and took control of the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel comfortable now using it [the gun], but I always said I never thought I would,\u201d McDonald said. And it worked.\u00a0As McDonald instructed the person on the phone to call 911, she backed away from the counter. The robber ran, and McDonald chased him into the parking lot. That last bit may have been ill-advised, but it worked for McDonald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything could happen had we not had that firearm in that store and she did not have access to it,\u201d Tigges told KCCI. \u201cWe\u2019ll never know what might have happened.\u201d\u00a0True enough.\u00a0And it will likely happen again, to someone else, after the robber changes his tactics (and his pants).\u00a0Police are still looking for the culprit.\u00a0He&#8217;s thought to be in his mid-to-late 50s, about 5&#8217;5&#8243; tall.\u00a0He has grey facial hair, and may flinch at the sight of small-framed blonde women.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A would-be thief in Fort Dodge, Iowa, thought he&#8217;d found a soft target in Discount Textbooks.
