Dictation. Lecturing. Pointedness. Many people who want to learn don\u2019t have the means or time to do it.&nbsp; Luckily, just about everything taught in the class is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moderndayrifleman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"things-i-learned-at-modern-day-sniper-school\" title=\"Modern Day Sniper School \u2013 10 Things I Learned\">online <\/a>for free and on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@MODERNDAYSNIPER\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"things-i-learned-at-modern-day-sniper-school\" title=\"Modern Day Sniper School \u2013 10 Things I Learned\">youtube channel<\/a>.&nbsp; They also put out a <a href=\"https:\/\/moderndaysniper.com\/podcasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"things-i-learned-at-modern-day-sniper-school\" title=\"Modern Day Sniper School \u2013 10 Things I Learned\">podcast<\/a> with tons of information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I prefer in-person classes when I can go participate as I learn and retain the information better.&nbsp; Where to Focus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a target focus instead of a reticle focus.&nbsp; Much like with a red dot, you want your focus to be on the target, not on the reticle.&nbsp; Look where you want the bullet to go on the target and the reticle will go there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-long-range-variables\">4. Long Range Variables<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-range shooting is simply managing variables.&nbsp; Most of the variables you can control or calculate, like barrel twist, optic height, target distance, temperature, altitude, bullet velocity, and others.&nbsp; One variable must always be tested, drag.&nbsp; Drag, often called Ballistic Coefficient is basically how slippery your bullet is in the air.&nbsp; Ballistic solvers have calculations for this but the drag changes with velocity so you have to true it.&nbsp; Truing your DOPE or drag model involves shooting a target and verifying the holdover is correct and if it is not adjusting your ballistic solver so that it is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0512-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Triggercam at Modern Day Sniper\" class=\"wp-image-196004\" title=\"Modern Day Sniper School \u2013 10 Things I Learned\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0512-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0512-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0512-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0512-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0512.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The trigger cam is a great teaching tool so the students can see exactly what the teacher sees.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-levels-and-cant\">3. Levels and Cant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Put a level on your rifle and use it!&nbsp; There are many ways to check that your rifle is level.&nbsp; Cheap solutions are about $20 and you can spend hundreds on electronic levels like the Send It level are over $200.&nbsp;&nbsp; They all do the same thing, so just pick one and mount it.&nbsp; Before each shot make sure your rifle is not canted using the level.&nbsp; 1 degree of cant will account for 9 inches of drift when shooting a 308 at 1000 yards, or just under 1 inch at 100 yards.&nbsp; It matters more than you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-learning-from-spotting\">2. Learning From Spotting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can learn just as much observing on glass as you can shooting.&nbsp; Learn to be a good spotter.&nbsp; Ideally, you want to set up your glass on a tripod right behind the shooter.&nbsp; In many conditions, you can see the bullet trace.&nbsp; Trace is the air being disturbed by the bullet in flight.&nbsp; It&#8217;s hard to find at first but once you know what you are looking for it is much easier to find again.&nbsp; If your shooter misses a target at 700 yards and kicks up dirt it may look like a low left miss for example. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the bullet hit the dirt 50 yards behind the target so the dirt doesn\u2019t tell you anything.&nbsp; If you watch the trace you can see exactly where the miss was.&nbsp; Spotting helps you learn how to read the wind and how much effect it has on the bullet.&nbsp; Lastly, a good spotter can talk a shooter onto target but you have to speak the same language.&nbsp; Give corrections in Mils\/MOA rather than target width or height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0480-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Modern Day Sniper spotting scope\" class=\"wp-image-196005\" title=\"Modern Day Sniper School \u2013 10 Things I Learned\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0480-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0480-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0480-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0480-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Durka-0480.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You can learn a lot from spotting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-reading-wind\">1.
