The White House has recently announced its support for a new gun control bill, the GOSAFE Act<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stefanie Feldman, director of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention<\/a>, affirmed the administration’s commitment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We support any effort to keep assault weapons and high-capacity magazines out of dangerous hands, as this bill would do,” Feldman stated<\/a>, referencing President Biden’s longstanding advocacy for gun control since his tenure as a senator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) criticized the bill, describing it as an overreach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NRA-ILA statement<\/a> highlighted concerns over the bill’s extensive prohibitions and its potential impact on law-abiding gun owners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Senators Angus King and Martin Heinrich have joined a motley succession of extreme anti-gun legislators to introduce perhaps the most sweeping gun prohibition bill of the 21st Century,” the statement read. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NRA-ILA criticized the bill for targeting law-abiding gun owners and not addressing the root causes of armed criminality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill\u2019s broad scope includes a ban on various firearms, targeting semiautomatic firearms as a class and imposing restrictions on magazine capacities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also grants the ATF authority to publish a list of permissible semiautomatic firearms for public sale and possession, a move that has drawn particular scrutiny from opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics also argue that the bill\u2019s provisions on semiautomatic handguns are vague and could lead to widespread bans on many popular self-defense handguns. The debate also touches on the Second Amendment. The NRA-ILA argues that the bill violates constitutional rights, citing the Supreme Court’s emphasis on protecting arms \u201cin common use\u201d for lawful purposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization asserts that the bill deviates from America’s historical approach to arms regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bill, if passed, would allow current owners of newly banned firearms to retain them but restricts their transfer options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also proposes reallocating funds earmarked for law enforcement to encourage Americans to surrender their guns to the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
