(<em>Photo: NRA<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"yoast-reading-time__wrapper\"><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__icon\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" data-icon=\"clock\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" style=\"display:inline-block;vertical-align:-0.1em\" role=\"img\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" stroke-width=\"2\" d=\"M12 8v4l3 3m6-3a9 9 0 11-18 0 9 9 0 0118 0z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__spacer\" style=\"display:inline-block;width:1em\"><\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__descriptive-text\">Estimated reading time:  <\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__reading-time\">4<\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__time-unit\"> minutes<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/national-rifle-association-nra-gun-rights-group-membership-finances-issues-1842678\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\">article<\/a> for Newsweek, journalist Kate Plummer argues that the National Rifle Association is &#8220;slowly dying.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She points to the following to make her case: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Membership Decline<\/strong>: Wayne LaPierre, head of the NRA, predicted in 2013 a growth to 10 million members. However, as of a recent report, the membership has declined to about 4.3 million.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financial Struggles<\/strong>: The NRA&#8217;s revenue dropped significantly, with a 52% decrease in overall revenue and a nearly 59% drop in membership dues since 2016. Membership dues in 2022 were down more than 40% from 2018.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Past Successes<\/strong>: The NRA had 230 legislative victories from 2003 to 2013.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recent Failures<\/strong>: More recently, the NRA failed to secure major legislative changes in 2017 and 2018, even with Republican control in Washington.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lawsuit by New York Attorney General<\/strong>: Letitia James filed a lawsuit alleging misappropriation of funds by top NRA officials, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/nra-board-reelects-wayne-lapierre-as-ceo-exec-vp\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\">LaPierre<\/a>, for personal use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bankruptcy and Financial Mismanagement<\/strong>: The NRA faced a $64 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/lapierre-responds-to-dismissal-of-bankruptcy-filing-nra-will-keep-fighting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\">reduction<\/a> in its balance sheet over three years, turning a surplus into a deficit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shift in Views<\/strong>: An NBC\/WSJ poll showed 40% viewing the NRA negatively in 2018, a first-ever overall negative perception.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other headwinds for the organization, Plummer points out, including the rise of the Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety over the past decade.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to Bloomberg&#8217;s billions, Everytown has proven to be a force to reckon with.  For example, it just outspent the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everytown.org\/press\/what-the-virginia-elections-mean-for-gun-safety-and-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\">NRA 10 to 1 in its own backyard<\/a>, in the 2023 Virginia elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Has the NRA seen better days?  No doubt about it.  But is it &#8220;slowly dying&#8221; &#8212; doubtful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look, the elephant in the room is Wayne LaPierre.  He has become a divisive figure due to the aforementioned allegations of financial mismanagement.  It&#8217;s not only about what happened to the organization under his watch but also what he was personally doing with donor dollars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-cool-new-colors-for-the-springfield-armory-hellion-bullpup\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/cool-new-colors-for-the-springfield-armory-hellion-bullpup\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\">Cool New Colors for the Springfield Armory Hellion Bullpup<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>LaPierre was, apparently, flying in private jets, buying lavish suits and receiving other &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nra-acknowledges-new-findings-of-excessive-benefits-paid-to-ceo-wayne-lapierre-11637706699\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\">excess benefits<\/a>&#8221; to the tune of $300,000.  LaPierre has since made good, though.  He cut a personal check to the organization to right his wrongs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some members this was enough.  For many others, including key &#8220;whale&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/nra-failing-get-members-donate-their-political-arm-1776617\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\">donors<\/a>, it wasn&#8217;t.  As a result, those who were still disgruntled flocked to other pro-gun outfits, including the Second Amendment Foundation, Gun Owners of America, and the Firearms Policy Coalition.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is gun owners may have stopped donating to NRA due to LaPierre&#8217;s perceived shenanigans, but they haven&#8217;t stopped donating to the pro-gun cause.  Nor have they stopped buying guns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Plummer&#8217;s credit, she acknowledges this in her article.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plummer writes, &#8220;Forty-five percent of U.S. households owned at least one firearm in 2022, according to research compiled by Statista, the highest figure since 2011\u2014and 8 percentage points higher than in 2013, the year LaPierre said the NRA was on track for &#8216;unprecedented&#8217; growth.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One can argue that the pro-gun movement has never been stronger.  With <a href=\"https:\/\/wamu.org\/story\/20\/09\/18\/how-many-people-in-the-u-s-own-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\">approximately 72 million gun owners<\/a> in this country, gun banners certainly have their work cut out for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four million of those still belong to the NRA, as highlighted earlier.  Four million dues-paying members is nothing to sneeze at.  And it all but ensures the NRA will continue to have a role to play in the 2A battles to come, even if that&#8217;s in a diminished capacity for the time being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also worth pointing out that LaPierre, 74, is not going to be around forever.  So, it&#8217;s reasonable to think that a change in leadership could rejuvenate America&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/home.nra.org\/about-the-nra\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"nra-is-slowly-dying-says-newsweek\" title=\"'NRA is Slowly Dying,' Says Newsweek\"> longest-standing civil rights organization<\/a>,. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s through internal reform or a renewed focus on its core mission, the NRA&#8217;s fate isn&#8217;t sealed yet. It&#8217;s a dynamic entity in a country where the debate over gun rights is far from settled.
