Gavin Newsom advocated for increased gun control measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics, including the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), label these reactions as political opportunism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They argue that the suggested regulations wouldn&#8217;t have stopped the Maine incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-specific-proposals-under-scrutiny\">Specific Proposals Under Scrutiny <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Republicans in Maine rejected a bill this year that would have required a waiting period for firearm purchases.<br \/><br \/>They seriously could not fathom waiting 72 hours to buy a gun.<br \/><br \/>Maine also does not\u2026<br \/>&#8211; Ban assault weapons<br \/>&#8211; Require permits to carry a gun in public<br \/>&#8211; Require\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/18IoTtYRsY\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"biden-newsom-exploit-maine-tragety-to-push-gun-control\" title=\"Biden, Newsom Exploit Maine Tragedy to Push Gun Control\">https:\/\/t.co\/18IoTtYRsY<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1717375493769670665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"biden-newsom-exploit-maine-tragety-to-push-gun-control\" title=\"Biden, Newsom Exploit Maine Tragedy to Push Gun Control\">October 26, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb noted Newsom&#8217;s call for a waiting period in Maine and Biden&#8217;s appeal for &#8220;universal background checks&#8221; and safe storage laws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gottlieb emphasized that neither measure would have averted Wednesday&#8217;s events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They\u2019ve pounced like craven political opportunists in hopes of using this tragedy to stir up public emotions in an effort to push gun restrictions they\u2019ve been promoting for years,&#8221; said Gottlieb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBiden has wanted to ban semiautomatic rifles for years,\u201d Gottlieb continued, \u201cwhen he knows rifles of any kind are involved in a fraction of murders, and he also knows there are millions of law-abiding owners of such firearms who have harmed nobody. Why should honest citizens be penalized for the rampage of one clearly disturbed individual with documented mental health issues?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden&#8217;s push to ban semiautomatic rifles also drew criticism, as did his desire to repeal laws shielding gun manufacturers from certain lawsuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-residents-response-to-maine-tragedy\">Residents&#8217; Response to Maine Tragedy <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the aftermath, many local residents reportedly armed themselves for protection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewiston Councilman Robert McCarthy, for instance, said to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"biden-newsom-exploit-maine-tragety-to-push-gun-control\" title=\"Biden, Newsom Exploit Maine Tragedy to Push Gun Control\">CNN<\/a><\/em>, &#8220;We locked the doors. We grabbed the guns.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others expressed regret at not owning firearms. Critics argue Biden&#8217;s gun control measures would disarm these concerned citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-saf-points-to-missed-warning-signs\">SAF Points to Missed Warning Signs <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) highlighted significant warning signs preceding the Lewiston shooting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They stated that the shooter&#8217;s recent history of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/29\/us\/maine-shooting-gunman.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"biden-newsom-exploit-maine-tragety-to-push-gun-control\" title=\"Biden, Newsom Exploit Maine Tragedy to Push Gun Control\"> mental health issues <\/a>should have barred him from possessing firearms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite threats made by the shooter previously, authorities made no moves to confiscate his weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-concerns-about-gun-free-zones\">Concerns About &#8220;Gun-Free Zones&#8221; <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SAF also remarked on the &#8220;gun-free zones&#8221; where the fatal attacks occurred. These areas, they argue, make individuals vulnerable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we have noted in our educational ad campaign,\u201d said Gottlieb, \u201cgun-free zones essentially make the people in those places nothing more than sitting ducks in a shooting gallery.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspect&#8217;s choice of venues, including a bowling alley that explicitly discouraged firearms, is under scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As SAF noted, a sign at the door of the bowling alley says, \u201cWe kindly ask that you refrain from bringing firearms in this building and we would appreciate it if you left them in your vehicle.
