Jones&#8217;s ambitious gun control initiative is facing a formidable challenge from Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a bid to tackle the rising menace of violence in St. Louis, Mayor Jones recently held a &#8220;listening session: with survivors, law enforcement leaders, and anti-2A activists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SLMPD Chief Robert J. Tracy, Office of Violence Prevention Director Wil Pinkney, and several Alderpersons were present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session delved into the experiences of gun violence survivors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this emotionally charged meeting, Mayor Jones, in collaboration with the Alderpersons, announced a series of measures targeting the 2A rights of law-abiding citizens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-points-of-this-proposed-legislation-include\">Key points of this proposed legislation include:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Banning military-grade weapons from city streets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preventing the transfer or sale of guns to minors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Action against ghost guns and untraceable firearms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preparing St. Louis for the introduction of Blair\u2019s Law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prohibiting insurrectionists and hate crime convicts from owning guns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Jones expressed her commitment to the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe come together around a shared vision: a safer, stronger St. Louis, ready to stand up for our values. We know Missourians are demanding state-level action to pass measures like red-flag laws and background checks, but we are ready to try every tool available to us at the local level to protect families from gun violence,&#8221; she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlouis-mo.gov\/government\/departments\/mayor\/news\/gun-violence-listening-sessions.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"st-louis-mayors-plan-to-ban-military-grade-weapons-faces-hurdle-from-missouris-attorney-general\" title=\"St. Louis Mayor's Plan to Ban 'Military-Grade Weapons' Faces Hurdle from Missouri's Attorney General\">said<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the proposal has not gone uncontested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General Andrew Bailey, in a strongly worded <a href=\"https:\/\/ago.mo.gov\/attorney-general-bailey-puts-mayor-jones-on-notice-after-her-announcement-to-target-gun-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"st-louis-mayors-plan-to-ban-military-grade-weapons-faces-hurdle-from-missouris-attorney-general\" title=\"St. Louis Mayor's Plan to Ban 'Military-Grade Weapons' Faces Hurdle from Missouri's Attorney General\">letter<\/a>, cautioned Mayor Jones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bailey emphasized that the legislation, as proposed, violates the state constitution.  Because the state constitution guarantees citizens an &#8220;unalienable&#8221; right to bear arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-ny-ammo-control-law-will-punish-high-school-clay-target-league\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ny-ammo-control-law-will-punish-high-school-clay-target-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"st-louis-mayors-plan-to-ban-military-grade-weapons-faces-hurdle-from-missouris-attorney-general\" title=\"St. Louis Mayor's Plan to Ban 'Military-Grade Weapons' Faces Hurdle from Missouri's Attorney General\">NY Ammo Control Law Will Punish High School Clay Target League<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing parallels with Chicago, Bailey remarked on the limited efficacy of strict gun laws in deterring crime.  He urged Mayor Jones to reconsider.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is my hope that you will reverse course and use existing law to combat the crime plaguing your city, rather than choosing to target the rights of law-abiding Missourians,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In other words, I encourage you to go after criminals, not guns,&#8221; Bailey continued.  &#8220;As the Attorney General for the State of Missouri, I will discharge my duties under the Constitution and resist any effort to infringe on the right of the people of Missouri to keep and bear arms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Jones&#8217;s measures, especially her signing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlouis-mo.gov\/government\/city-laws\/board-bills\/boardbill.cfm?bbDetail=true&amp;BBId=14249\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"st-louis-mayors-plan-to-ban-military-grade-weapons-faces-hurdle-from-missouris-attorney-general\" title=\"St. Louis Mayor's Plan to Ban 'Military-Grade Weapons' Faces Hurdle from Missouri's Attorney General\">BB29<\/a> that regulates open carry, along with the proposed new legislation, will be closely watched as the Board of Aldermen returns to session on Sept. 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unfolding scenario promises a heated legal and political battle over the contentious issue of gun rights and reform in St. Louis.
