There\u2019s a very good chance your firearms are loaded with self-defense ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have wondered, though, how these rounds would actually perform in a worst-case scenario. So you jump online to order some of that ballistic gelatin you\u2019ve read about&#8211;and discover it costs $300 and more for a single block, plus shipping! You know, that thing we might <em>have to<\/em> shoot regardless of how much we&#8217;d hate to? In creating a facsimile of what an actual self-defense bullet might have to go into and through, the Intruder may well provide a better representation of what can and can not be expected of said bullet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-it-is\">What It Is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The front of the Intruder box has nine bullseyes embossed onto the cardboard. Behind the cardboard is a tough but flexible layer of a rubbery material. Directly behind this is a much harder but thinner layer of a hard plastic-like material.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, the elongated rectangle behind each of these bullseyes holds a water-filled plastic container, followed by what looks like an air pillow used for packing\u2014air to represent an expanded lung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, more \u201cbone\u201d material and muscle\/sternum-like flex material are at the very rear of the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the photo below diagrams:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1 \u2013 Outer Cardboard = Skin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 \u2013 Flex Layer = Muscle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3 \u2013 Harder Layer = Bone (Front Rib Cage)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4 and 5 &#8212; Fluid&nbsp;+ Air Pillow = Lungs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6 \u2013 Hard Layer = Bone (Rear Rib Cage)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7 \u2013 Flex Layer = Muscle and Tissue<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8 \u2013 Outer Cardboard = Skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int2.png\" alt=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" class=\"wp-image-183536\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-reasoning-behind-this\">The Reasoning Behind This<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Intruder in a Box is the creation of Dave Giurintano, CEO of UBS, who holds a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) and teaches Senior Design at Louisiana State University\u2019s Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Joey LaBlanc, MSME and Design and Development Engineer for UBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both are hardcore shooting enthusiasts or &#8220;geeks&#8221; as they sometimes refer to themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With their engineering education and shooting experiences, the pair formed the idea to build a system that more accurately reflected the muscles, sternum, and rib bones a defensive round would encounter on an actual center mass shot. For testing defensive ammunition, layers of clothing are often placed in front of the gel blocks. Frequently, bullets will be fired first through a layer of automotive glass or a piece of drywall to replicate conditions a law enforcement officer might encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, these tests try to determine bullet expansion, the size and depth of the wound channel, and how much weight the bullet may retain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int2b-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Ballistic test from pre-intruder in a box days\" class=\"wp-image-183537\" style=\"width:840px;height:630px\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ballistic gel block from an ammo test McCombie did several years ago.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-ballistic-gel-problem\">The Ballistic Gel Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ballistic gel is built to reflect the overall, <em>average<\/em> density of the human body. That is, the density of the body\u2019s bone, muscle, other tissue, and fluids averaged out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as Giurintano explained to me in an email, \u201cWe calibrated our materials in the box versus bone and muscle and used published material properties for internal organs. It is simple&#8211;ballistics gel is not a real replication of the organs&nbsp;and structure&nbsp;of the human body.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which means that gel presents a consistent resistance to a bullet. That\u2019s one of the key reasons gel is used: the resistance is always the same allowing different bullets to be fired into it and to be then compared accordingly, with the gel providing a common medium. &nbsp;<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int2c-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" class=\"wp-image-183538\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ballistic gel usually produces bullets with nice, even expansion.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, tissue and muscle, human organs and bones, resist and flex at different levels when force is applied, including the force of a bullet. Gel does not account for the actual flexing and compression that occurs, for example, when a bullet passes through muscle to bone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shoot-the-box-intruder-in-a-box\">Shoot the Box &#8211; Intruder In A Box<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I was sent a new Intruder in a Box, set it up on a table outdoors, and proceeded to shoot 9MM and 45 ACP self-defense rounds into the Box from five yards. The 9MMs were shot using a B6C semi-automatic pistol from <a href=\"https:\/\/sarusa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"intruder-in-a-box-a-better-way-to-test-self-defense-ammunition\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\">SAR-USA<\/a> , the 45\u2019s with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smith-wesson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"intruder-in-a-box-a-better-way-to-test-self-defense-ammunition\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\">Smith &amp; Wesson<\/a> M&amp;P 45 Shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int3-1024x787.jpeg\" alt=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" class=\"wp-image-183539\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Range time with the Intruder, two pistols and several ammo types.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I shot the same brand 9MM rounds twice, one round apiece per bullseye, and one round per bullseye of 45 ACP into the remaining three bullseyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only problem I had occurred during my first 45 ACP round. I aimed that round at the bottom lefthand bullseye but didn\u2019t have my handgun lined up correctly, and the bullet tore out the side of the box. Oops!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int5-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Intruder In A Box after shooter messed  up\" class=\"wp-image-183540\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shooter error!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-testing-results-for-intruder-in-a-box\">Testing Results For Intruder In A Box<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the shooting complete, I took apart the Intruder to examine the interior compartments and to retrieve the bullets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int6-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" class=\"wp-image-183541\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Top of the Intruder box opened after shooting. The bullets retrieved were always nicely mushroomed and retained nearly every grain of their weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The handgun hunting bullets I\u2019ve dug out of deer and hogs? Not so pretty and usually with part or parts of the original bullets sheared off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int7-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"damage on intruder in a box after practice shooting\" class=\"wp-image-183542\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Damage done by 9mm bullet that passed through the water-filled white block and then the air pillow. Note the entry hole at the bottom of photo. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I wasn\u2019t surprised that half the 9mm bullets shot into the Intruder were fairly mashed up, and didn\u2019t display that near-perfect mushroom look after impacting the hard rubber-ish surface of the first black layer and the much harder \u201cbone\u201d layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int8-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" class=\"wp-image-183543\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">9MM bullet that was stopped between the rear &#8220;bone&#8221; layer and the flex layer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But I was a little shocked to see that some big-name 9mm self-defense bullets blew up once past these first two layers, jackets separating and petals designed to expand coming off the main body of the bullets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two 45 ACP\u2019s bullets stayed intact, with minimal expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int10-1024x860.jpeg\" alt=\"Two bullets shot through the Intruder In  a Box\" class=\"wp-image-183544\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The two 45 ACP bullets shot into the Intruder.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-notes-on-the-bullets\">Some Notes On The Bullets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 9mms of course, left the muzzle at 300 to 400 feet per second faster than the 45\u2019s, and that extra speed and the lighter weight no doubt were factors in the 9mms coming apart.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int12-1024x669.jpeg\" alt=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" class=\"wp-image-183545\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Of the six 9mm bullets fired into the Intruder, three came apart, jackets separating from lead cores.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>None of the bullets, 9mm or 45 ACP, went all the way through and behind the Intruder, which measures approximately 10.5 inches from front to back. Minus the bullets that came apart, the remaining bullets were stopped by the rear two layers. Some were stuck into the \u201cbone\u201d layer, and some made it past and were then held up in the flesh and muscle layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-question-i-had\">A Question I Had<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nine shots into the Intruder does not a study of self-defense bullets and their capabilities make. But it does bring up some interesting and rather pointed questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Int11-1-1024x688.jpeg\" alt=\"Intruder in a Box: A Better Way to Test Self-Defense Ammunition?\" class=\"wp-image-183547\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The three 9mms that, for the most part, held together.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Such as, will the self-defense 9MM bullets that came apart in the Intruder come apart inside an actual intruder? And if they do come apart after contacting bone and tough muscle, how effective as threat stoppers are such rounds?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t know the answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusions\">Conclusions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on my very limited use of the Intruder, it would seem that the 45 ACP self-defense round is the way to go. But that would need to be confirmed on other tests with the Intruder and some other way to see what these rounds do with actual bone and flesh.&nbsp; I\u2019d also like to do gel testing with all the rounds I used for the Intruder test and compare and contrast results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We carry and keep protection in our homes because real lives could be at stake.
