The Controversial Turn in a Store Robbery Incident\"><em>KCRA<\/em><\/a> reports that other accounts subsequently copied and reposted the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original \u201ccamera guy,\u201d who asked to be called \u201cDeda,\u201d stepped forward to explain the events in the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-startled-by-a-robbery\">Startled By A Robbery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Can\u2019t make this up! Stockton convenience store owners who put the beat down on a would-be-thief in viral video are now under investigation for assault! <br \/><br \/>America 2023, where criminals are treated as victims, and victims are treated as criminals. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/InbKLDBB4o\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"watch-hero-or-accomplice-controversial-robbery-turned-beating\" title=\"WATCH: Hero or Accomplice? The Controversial Turn in a Store Robbery Incident\">August 6, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports, Deda owned his own business a half-mile away from the 7-Eleven in Stockton, California. He had stopped by to get gas and a drink when he noticed something that startled him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the video, we can see the robber with a blue shirt wrapped around his head. He grabbed a trash can and took it behind the counter. Deda tells local news affiliates that he wanted to \u201cmaintain neutral\u201d and opted to film the proceedings, rather than intercede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspect, who seems to have gone unidentified, began to fill the trash can with cigarette boxes. The <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/eIFKtOsZl8c\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"watch-hero-or-accomplice-controversial-robbery-turned-beating\" title=\"WATCH: Hero or Accomplice? The Controversial Turn in a Store Robbery Incident\">video<\/a>, which goes on for five minutes, shows the robber shouting expletives and threatening violence against those in the store.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the course of the robbery, Deda can be heard asking the suspect for \u201cswishers.&#8221; Of course, he was ignored. He repeatedly defended the robber, telling the employees to \u201cjust let him go\u201d and \u201cthere\u2019s nothing you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-robber-gets-a-beating\">Robber Gets A Beating<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This twisted robbery finally took a sharp turn when the suspect attempted to push past an employee. Rather than sit back, the employee stopped him and held him while another employee brought out a long stick.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To quote Deda, \u201cAnd then the fiasco happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently fed up with his threats, the employees proceeded to beat the robber. According to a Twitter report from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/charliekirk11\/status\/1688233221501415424?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"watch-hero-or-accomplice-controversial-robbery-turned-beating\" title=\"WATCH: Hero or Accomplice? The Controversial Turn in a Store Robbery Incident\"><em>KCRA<\/em><\/a>, this was the third time the suspect had stopped by the store and threatened them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beating went on for several minutes, as the video shows. The suspect had received over 20 hits before Deda stepped in. At this point, the robber was crying and claiming that he couldn\u2019t walk now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deda claims that he was the one who eventually de-escalated the situation. Deda told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kktv.com\/2023\/08\/04\/graphic-convenience-store-workers-caught-video-beating-man-seen-trying-take-cigarettes\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"watch-hero-or-accomplice-controversial-robbery-turned-beating\" title=\"WATCH: Hero or Accomplice? The Controversial Turn in a Store Robbery Incident\"><em>KKTV<\/em><\/a>, \u201cI had to get really stern with my words. \u2018It\u2019s enough\u2019 so they kind of stopped.\u201d Continuing on, he said that he was explaining the situation. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t have a gun. He\u2019s all right. Are you done? Are you done? Are you done?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-bizarre-robbery-ends\">A Bizarre Robbery Ends<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, the robber was allowed to leave, escorted out by Deda. He instructed the robber not to \u201ccome back here no more,\u201d going so far as to say that the robber risked being shot if he returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding to the bizarre nature of the situation, the suspect asked for a soda before leaving the building<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the events concluded, the employees filed a police report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation is ongoing, and so far no one appears to have been charged. He claims that the city needs to \u201clearn how to love each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the severity of the beating, the irony lies in the robber emerging as a victim. Meanwhile, Deda has effectively positioned himself as a hero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there heroism in remaining passive during a crime? Was Deda justified in his stance as a \u201cneutral\u201d observer?
