Mike Bost&#8217;s (IL-12) amendment, <a href=\"https:\/\/veterans.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/the_veterans_2nd_amendment_protection_act_-_copy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"what-the-house-just-did-to-protect-veterans-2a-rights\" title=\"What the House Just Did to Protect Veterans' 2A Rights\"><strong>H.R. 705: The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act<\/strong>.<\/a> This amendment prevents the Veterans Affairs Department from forwarding veterans&#8217; names to the Department of Justice for background checks associated with financial assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current law required the VA to pass on veterans&#8217; information to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System without any judicial review or due process when a fiduciary is assigned to aid with their finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &#8220;mental defective&#8221; was previously applied to veterans needing financial aid under the VA Fiduciary Rule. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bost criticized this term as an insult to those who served the country and opposed the violation of their rights. I\u2019m pleased the House passed my amendment to stop this unconstitutional assault on the rights of our veterans,&#8221; Bost concluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bost&#8217;s amendment was part of the annual military construction and veterans&#8217; programs funding bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It received support from top Second Amendment organizations such as the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America, and the National Association for Gun Rights.
