After being rushed to a nearby hospital, Mathis was pronounced dead from several gunshot wounds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5atlanta.com\/news\/greenbrair-parkway-apartment-deadly-shooting-homeowner\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"wrong-door-or-attempted-burglary-man-fatally-shot-in-atlanta\" title=\"Wrong Door Or Attempted Burglary? Man Fatally Shot In Atlanta\"><em>Fox5 News<\/em><\/a>, the police said that earlier that night they were \u201ccalled to the same apartment and encountered the man.\u201d According to reports, he already lived in the Atlanta complex and was described as being \u201cbelligerent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantanewsfirst.com\/2023\/07\/31\/homeowner-fatally-shoots-man-he-believes-is-intruder-atlanta-police-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"wrong-door-or-attempted-burglary-man-fatally-shot-in-atlanta\" title=\"Wrong Door Or Attempted Burglary? She said, \u201cIn America, you do have to kind of protect yourself.\u201d But wondered at the nature of the break-in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, investigators are classifying the shots as an act of self-defense. The homeowner who fired the shots at Mathis apparently did so believing that his home was being broken into.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wrong-door-or-something-more\">Wrong Door Or Something More?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Police are speculating that Mathis had a much simpler motive than burglary. It is possible that he was at the wrong door, and thought he was entering his own home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police now have homicide detectives on the case attempting to determine the truth. We are told that neither of the men knew each other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of right now though, many details have been kept on the down-low. The homeowner\u2019s name is being kept private, as well as any statements from him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-better-safe-than-sorry\">Better Safe Than Sorry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is still unclear whether the homeowner will be charged for the shooting. While his actions had unfortunate results, we must remember that he didn\u2019t know what he was facing. If it had been someone dangerous, he would have been glad to be prepared.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One statistic from <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/content\/pub\/ascii\/vdhb.txt\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"wrong-door-or-attempted-burglary-man-fatally-shot-in-atlanta\" title=\"Wrong Door Or Attempted Burglary?
