{"id":190919,"date":"2023-07-27T01:43:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-27T05:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=182416"},"modified":"2023-07-27T01:43:00","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T17:28:22","slug":"zealand-mass-shooting-highlights-need-for-crime-reform-not-gun-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/zealand-mass-shooting-highlights-need-for-crime-reform-not-gun-reform\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand Mass Shooting Highlights Need for Crime Reform, Not Gun Reform"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yoast-reading-time__wrapper\"><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__icon\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" data-icon=\"clock\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" style=\"display:inline-block;vertical-align:-0.1em\" role=\"img\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" stroke-width=\"2\" d=\"M12 8v4l3 3m6-3a9 9 0 11-18 0 9 9 0 0118 0z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__spacer\" style=\"display:inline-block;width:1em\"><\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__descriptive-text\">Estimated reading time:  <\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__reading-time\">3<\/span><span class=\"yoast-reading-time__time-unit\"> minutes<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent mass shooting in Auckland, New Zealand highlights the need to reform our approach to criminal justice, instead of persisting with efforts to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens under the pretext of \u201cgun safety reform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shooting incident took place ahead of FIFA Women&#039;s World Cup in Auckland | WION\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D-x582MM8zg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">New Zealand&#8217;s sweeping gun-control laws failed to prevent a recent mass shooting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nation with some of the most stringent gun laws on the planet, due in part to recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-newzealand-shooting\/new-zealands-pm-ardern-acts-to-tighten-gun-laws-further-six-months-after-attack-idUSKCN1VY092\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"zealand-mass-shooting-highlights-need-for-crime-reform-not-gun-reform\" title=\"New Zealand Mass Shooting Highlights Need for Crime Reform, Not Gun Reform\">draconian measures put into place<\/a>, an apparently disgruntled employee attacked his worksite in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=newssearch&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj6_vbbqa2AAxUhIzQIHbPUDkAQxfQBKAB6BAgIEAE&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reuters.com%2Fworld%2Fasia-pacific%2Fpart-new-zealands-auckland-cordoned-off-after-reports-shooting-2023-07-19%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw0KLBObkUj3c-fLpkaDPWUW&amp;opi=89978449\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"zealand-mass-shooting-highlights-need-for-crime-reform-not-gun-reform\" title=\"New Zealand Mass Shooting Highlights Need for Crime Reform, Not Gun Reform\">mass shooting<\/a> that left five injured, and three dead \u2013 including the gunman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many strict gun laws on the books, one must wonder how this could happen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The firearm used in the attack was a pump-action shotgun; a firearm not even banned under New Zealand\u2019s most-recent spate of gun control laws.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The alleged shooter is known to have a criminal history including domestic violence, which should have barred him from obtaining the now-required firearm license to possess a firearm in New Zealand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Indeed, the alleged shooter was actively serving a home detention sentence for another crime altogether but was still given an exemption to leave his home to work at the very site he attacked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even New Zealand\u2019s extensive gun-control laws do not stem the drive for psychopaths to carry out horrific acts. A 2019 mass shooting that killed 51 worshippers at two mosques in the city of Christchurch resulted in the enactment of a strict, nationwide ban on semiautomatic weapons in that country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-see-also-avatar-director-james-cameron-regrets-gunplay-in-past-films-happy-to-live-in-new-zealand-where-assault-weapons-are-banned\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/avatar-director-james-cameron-regrets-gunplay-in-past-films-happy-to-live-in-new-zealand-where-assault-weapons-are-banned\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"zealand-mass-shooting-highlights-need-for-crime-reform-not-gun-reform\" title=\"New Zealand Mass Shooting Highlights Need for Crime Reform, Not Gun Reform\">Avatar\u2019 Director James Cameron Regrets Gunplay in Past Films, Happy to Live in New Zealand Where \u2018Assault Weapons\u2019 Are Banned&nbsp;<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern rode a swell of public sentiment to get lawmakers to ban \u201cmilitary-style\u201d semiautomatic firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the draconian measures were only nominally complied with, at best. By most estimates, the mandatory \u201cbuy-back\u201d scheme only resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.com\/opinion\/editorials\/editorial-gun-control-colorado-needs-crime-control\/article_a30923c0-28c5-11ee-aa77-cb0a4b57c38b.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"zealand-mass-shooting-highlights-need-for-crime-reform-not-gun-reform\" title=\"New Zealand Mass Shooting Highlights Need for Crime Reform, Not Gun Reform\">50,000 firearms being turned in<\/a>.  That&#8217;s barely 3% of that nation\u2019s estimated guns in circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ardern\u2019s measures didn\u2019t even apply in this case.
