Gretchen Whitmer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/14\/politics\/governor-gretchen-whitmer-gun-violence-prevention-michigan\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-gun-control-package-signed-into-law\" title=\"Michigan Gun Control Package Signed Into Law\">signed several gun control bills<\/a> into law. The six new measures restrict 2A rights through additional background check requirements and \u201csafe storage\u201d policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The packaged, dubbed \u201cCommonsense Gun Violence Prevention Legislation,\u201d was pushed through a Democratic-majority legislature before hitting the governor\u2019s desk last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michigan Democrats have been working on these laws for over a year, but their efforts were stalled by the previously Republican-led legislature. Michigan Senate Expected to Pass Gun Control!<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Republican state <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/michigan-gun-laws-red-flag-democrats-b776dd9f64d2264a0f4c94a498b6035b\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-gun-control-package-signed-into-law\" title=\"Michigan Gun Control Package Signed Into Law\">Sen. Joseph Bellino<\/a> was quite vocal against the new measures calling them \u201cseverely flawed\u201d and pinpointing that none of the new restrictions would have prevented the MSU shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, two 2A groups, Great Lakes Gun Rights and Michigan Open Carry, have filed a suit against the state legislature claiming they were not given an adequate opportunity to speak out against the bills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these bills were introduced in the wake of the MSU shooting. As a result, Democratic legislators were able to force such bills through both the Senate and House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laws-on-universal-background-checks-for-gun-control\">Laws on \u201cUniversal\u201d Background Checks for Gun Control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUniversal background checks and safe storage are long-overdue steps we are proud to take today that will save lives by&nbsp;keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and domestic abusers and children in the home,\u201d Whitmer said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/04\/13\/whitmer-signs-commonsense-gun-violence-prevention-legislation-to-keep-michigan-communities-safe\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-gun-control-package-signed-into-law\" title=\"Michigan Gun Control Package Signed Into Law\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the bills from the package are directed to increase background check requirements. These bills impose the necessity of a background check in order to purchase any firearm in the state regardless of the type of firearm or if the sale is private or from a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cSafe Storage\u201d Gun Control Laws<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another part of the gun control package includes requirements for the \u201csafe storage\u201d of firearms. The new laws will lead to \u201cpenalties for storing or leaving a firearm where it may be accessed by a minor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the safe storage requirement, one of the laws removes sales tax from firearm storage equipment to make it more affordable for gun owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gun Control in the United States<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last several years, states claiming to improve safety and prevent gun violence have begun pushing more for universal background checks, safe storage laws, and further red-flag laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yes, in that it will make it more difficult for Michiganders to exercise their rights and to defend themselves and their families. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/f7bhhVvJ1z\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-gun-control-package-signed-into-law\" title=\"Michigan Gun Control Package Signed Into Law\">https:\/\/t.co\/f7bhhVvJ1z<\/a><\/p>&mdash; GreatLakesGunRights (@GLGunRights) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GLGunRights\/status\/1646621400801656832?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"michigan-gun-control-package-signed-into-law\" title=\"Michigan Gun Control Package Signed Into Law\">April 13, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these laws have done little to keep guns out of the hands of individuals who wish to do harm.
