{"id":190474,"date":"2023-04-10T17:27:37","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T21:27:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=178165"},"modified":"2023-04-10T17:27:37","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T17:29:46","slug":"washington-state-democrats-force-partisan-assault-weapon-ban-through-senate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/washington-state-democrats-force-partisan-assault-weapon-ban-through-senate\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington State Democrats Force Partisan &#8216;Assault Weapon&#8217; Ban Through Senate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full essb-block-image\" data-essb-pin-description=\"Washington House Bill 1240 assault weapon ban reported by FOX News 12\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/WA-HB1240.jpg\" alt=\"Washington House Bill 1240 as reported by Fox News 12\" class=\"wp-image-178169\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Washington State Senate has passed <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1240&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2023\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"washington-state-democrats-force-partisan-assault-weapon-ban-through-senate\" title=\"Washington State Democrats Force Partisan 'Assault Weapon' Ban Through Senate\">House Bill 1240<\/a>, which prohibits the manufacture, distribution, purchase, and sale of &#8220;assault weapons&#8221; within the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theolympian.com\/news\/politics-government\/article274115110.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"washington-state-democrats-force-partisan-assault-weapon-ban-through-senate\" title=\"Washington State Democrats Force Partisan 'Assault Weapon' Ban Through Senate\">27-21 vote <\/a>in favor on Saturday, mostly along party lines. Gov. Jay Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson had called for the legislation, and Rep. Strom Peterson introduced it, with 25 other House Democrats co-sponsoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill now returns to the House chamber, its point of origin, for review of amendments, before moving on to Gov. Inslee&#8217;s desk for signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Washington Senate passes assault weapons ban, HB 1240 returns to House\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TwgrilpflZs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If signed, the bill\u2019s emergency clause will command immediate activation of the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HB1240 comes just one day after lawmakers voted to approve a separate bill requiring a 10-day waiting period on all firearm purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-house-bill-1240\">House Bill 1240<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>House Bill 1240 prohibits the \u201cmanufacture, importation, distribution, sale, or offer for sale of any assault weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the ban, the legislation defines \u201cassault weapons\u201d ambiguously as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>semiautomatic rifles with an overall length of less than 30 inches; conversion kits and parts that can be used to assemble an assault weapon or convert a firearm into an assault weapon, if the parts are in the possession of or under the control of the same person; semiautomatic centerfire rifles that have the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and have one or more additional features listed in the bill; semiautomatic centerfire rifles with a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than ten rounds; semiautomatic pistols that have the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and have one or more additional features listed in the bill; semiautomatic shotguns that have one or more additional features listed in the bill.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Features such as folding or telescoping stocks, flash suppressors, muzzle brakes, and thumbhole stocks are also listed in the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/saf-files-legal-challenge-to-wa-mag-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"washington-state-democrats-force-partisan-assault-weapon-ban-through-senate\" title=\"Washington State Democrats Force Partisan 'Assault Weapon' Ban Through Senate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAF Files Legal Challenge to WA Mag Ban<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the ban excludes sales to law enforcement and transfers for those who inherit such firearms. There are also no restrictions for those who currently own sporting weapons. Ron Muzzall told the Senate that 37 bills have been passed by state lawmakers to reduce gun violence since 2015. Of those, none have prevented gun violence or crime. Continuing, he explained that those laws haven\u2019t been working and that crime in Washington isn\u2019t just about firearms, it\u2019s also about drugs and unsafe drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In regard to House Bill 1240, Muzzall said, \u201cThe one thing that I see that lacks in this legislation today is bipartisanship to solve the problem. Why? Some edits were approved such as Sen. Keith Wagoner\u2019s consideration for retired and active-duty military members moving into the state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other amendments, like Sen. McCune\u2019s attempt to remove the emergency clause, were not as successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sporting Rifles Across the Nation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Given recent events, gun enthusiasts and defenders of the Second Amendment across the country are closely monitoring the ongoing assault on our rights.
