The last day\u2019s official competition matches were threatened by Tropical Storm Lee, swirling out over the Atlantic Ocean and bringing a little rain and wind to the Northeast and the SIG Sauer Academy and Experience Center campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter. The competitors at this year\u2019s&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adaptiveshoot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"2023-adss-competition-extremely-motivating-building-on-past-success\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\">ADSS<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;have been through more difficult challenges. They were here for education, training and most importantly, the competition \u2013 both among friends and with themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By all measures 2023 was a big success and built off of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/momentums-the-word-following-adss-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"2023-adss-competition-extremely-motivating-building-on-past-success\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\"><strong>last year\u2019s momentum<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-extremely-motivating\">\u2018Extremely Motivating\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the fifth year for the ADSS match and it\u2019s hard to believe there were only 13 participants the very first year. Now, dozens of competitors from across the country gathered again to push themselves and demonstrate what resolve really looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing what we can accomplish when we don\u2019t care about who gets credit,\u201d said ADSS founder&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/adaptive_shooting_summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"2023-adss-competition-extremely-motivating-building-on-past-success\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\"><strong>Trevor Baucom<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cADSS is about getting people out to shoot and finding a way to help those with physical limitations recognize they\u2019re in this community too and can participate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\" id=\"attachment_43519\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/JakeAltman-ADSS.jpg\" alt=\"Jake Altman at 2023 Adaptive Defensive Shooting Summit ADSS\" class=\"wp-image-43519\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Jake Altman (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/one.hand.gunner\/?igshid=NzZhOTFlYzFmZQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"2023-adss-competition-extremely-motivating-building-on-past-success\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\">@One.Hand.Gunner<\/a><\/strong>) at the 2023 Adaptive Defensive Shooting Summit ADSS<\/em> (<em>Photo: NSSF<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>One of this year\u2019s competitors was Jake Altman from North Carolina. He goes by&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/one.hand.gunner\/?igshid=NzZhOTFlYzFmZQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"2023-adss-competition-extremely-motivating-building-on-past-success\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\">@One.Hand.Gunner<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;on social media and was a first-time competitor. Altman spent six and a half years in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer and carried out several anti-IED (improvised explosive device) operations in Iraq. He was injured and lost an arm serving his country but doesn\u2019t let that stop him from doing what he loves. Altman was amazed at what he saw in his fellow competitors in Epping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a couple words \u2013 very inspirational,\u201d Altman told me. \u201cBeing an upper extremity amputee and witnessing individuals with mobility issues, it puts things into perspective. And to see the participants compete the way they did, was extremely motivating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Baucom organized the ADSS with a focus on introducing and connecting participants with various competitive shooting disciplines, stages and simulations. He included Precision Rifle Shooting (PRS) stages, 3-gun shooting courses (where competitors shoot rifles, shotguns and pistols) and Steel Challenge shoots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Altman was one of a few upper extremity adaptive ability shooters. Several competitors have lower extremity injuries, including paraplegic and quadriplegic shooters using wheelchairs, as well as competitors with one or two prosthetic legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baucom explained how he approaches rethinking the match each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year we had a woman who had never fired a gun in her life and we also had people who can compete heads up with the best shooters in the country. Everyone is welcome at ADSS,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-first-timer-hooked\">First-Timer Hooked<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol Brunjes of Maine is the first-time shooter Baucom referenced. She goes by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/threefourthsme\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"2023-adss-competition-extremely-motivating-building-on-past-success\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\"><strong>@ThreeFourthsMe<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;on Instagram and uses a wheelchair. ADSS was her very first time to handle a firearm. (<em>Photo: NSSF<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Brunjes said, \u201cI went into ADSS with the thought of learning how to shoot for home and personal protection. What I came out with was a feeling of inclusion in an amazing community!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baucom credited the SIG Sauer range staff for their participation in the weekend\u2019s events, noting they got Brunjes comfortable handling firearms safely and responsibly quickly so she could participate by the final day\u2019s match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe had never fired a gun in her life. They adjusted and put her through a one-on-one first shots class. A basic and advanced class and at the end of the event, after three days of training and a match, Carol\u2019s all smiles and ready to do more,\u201d Baucom revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI tried very hard not to get hooked on another expensive sport and thought I would get away with it but the last day got me. I loved the various stages and the encouragement from the instructors and my squad,\u201d Brunjes said. \u201cADSS has given my husband and me a sport where he does not have to be my support. We can be equals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-camaraderie-among-competitors\">Camaraderie Among Competitors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s ADSS match saw plenty of new faces, but familiar returning competitors were out in full force as well. One of the returners is Emily Cotton. This year\u2019s competition wasn\u2019t her first and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/FOo6J6xNoDQ?si=nXMKdE3jvDDmlcv2&amp;t=577\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"2023-adss-competition-extremely-motivating-building-on-past-success\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\"><strong>her story<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;is a well-known one among the adaptive ability shooting community. She still found the training and classes informative and helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\" id=\"attachment_43522\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Emily-ADSS.jpg\" alt=\"Emily Cotton at 2023 Adaptive Defensive Shooting Summit ADSS\" class=\"wp-image-43522\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Emily Cotton at the 2023 Adaptive Defensive Shooting Summit ADSS<\/em> (<em>Photo: NSSF<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was my second year at ADSS and I had a fabulous time,\u201d Cotton exclaimed. \u201cThe training classes were informative and I learned some new drills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Describing the welcoming environment and closeness among even the fiercest of competitors, Cotton summed up the event succinctly. \u201cThe best part about ADSS, though, is the camaraderie among us \u2013 new friendships, reconnecting with friends from last year, and shooting with my peer group \u2013 it\u2019s priceless!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-industry-all-in\">Industry All In<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NSSF \u2013 The Firearm Industry Trade Association \u2013 was a proud sponsor of the weekend\u2019s gathering. Bringing so many members of the firearm community together was a goal of Baucom\u2019s. And it\u2019s clear he\u2019s succeeding in that endeavor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe compete for sponsors [with other matches] but we share the same mission. We work together,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re hosted by SIG Sauer and the SIG Sauer Academy who compete with other ADSS sponsors like Ruger, S&amp;W, Canik and Glock. Yet everyone is able to put business aside to come together and help people with disabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Group-ADSS.jpg\" alt=\"Group picture from 2023 Adaptive Defensive Shooting Summit ADSS\" class=\"wp-image-43523\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(<em>Photo: NSSF<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a main point of mission for the firearm industry, ensuring everyone recognizes the Second Amendment is for all. ADSS is the pinnacle reminder of that. Over the past few years, firearm sales among law-abiding Americans reached record numbers and the current streak of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutguns.com\/bottomless-demand-americans-added-another-1-1-million-firearms-to-their-safes-in-august\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"2023-adss-competition-extremely-motivating-building-on-past-success\" title=\"2023 ADSS Competition 'Extremely Motivating,' Building On Past Success\">more than four straight years of one million or more<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) verifications each month continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gun-owning community has never been more diverse than it currently is and that includes Americans with adaptive abilities. Baucom added the importance of highlighting events like ADSS to continue bringing new safe and responsible shooters into the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery new shooter strengthens the pro-gun position.
