Ned Lamont&#8217;s far-reaching gun-control agenda, which is being touted as the most stringent since the tragic Sandy Hook shooting, reached a boiling point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/asp\/menu\/CommDocTmyBillAllComm.asp?bill=HB-06667&amp;doc_year=2023\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"legislative-hearing-reached-boiling-point-over-gov-ned-lamonts-gun-control-proposal\" title=\"Legislative Hearing Reached Boiling Point Over Gov. Ned Lamont\u2019s Gun Control Proposal\">5,000 written testimonies<\/a> and more than 150 individuals addressing the panel directly, it was a tense affair that was deeply divided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur officers have recovered 218 guns off the streets of Waterbury in 2022,\u201d Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said. \u201cOf those guns, 22 were \u2018ghost guns.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to gun control advocates, Connecticut\u2019s laws have too many loopholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must strengthen the current safe storage and &#8216;ghost gun&#8217; regulations in our state,\u201d said Laura Kabel of Bridgeport, with the group Moms Demand Action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/connecticut-governor-announces-plans-for-more-gun-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"legislative-hearing-reached-boiling-point-over-gov-ned-lamonts-gun-control-proposal\" title=\"Legislative Hearing Reached Boiling Point Over Gov. Ned Lamont\u2019s Gun Control Proposal\">Connecticut Governor Announces Plans for More Gun Control<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to gun owners, the bill will have minimal impact on reducing illegal firearms. \u201cThe bill targets law-abiding gun owners, not criminals,\u201d Zackery Mele told lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lamont\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/2023\/TOB\/H\/PDF\/2023HB-06667-R00-HB.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"legislative-hearing-reached-boiling-point-over-gov-ned-lamonts-gun-control-proposal\" title=\"Legislative Hearing Reached Boiling Point Over Gov. Ned Lamont\u2019s Gun Control Proposal\">proposal<\/a> includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Handgun purchases limited to one per month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New 10-day waiting period<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family violence crime disqualifier to obtain a pistol permit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long gun purchase age raised to 21<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All \u201cghost guns,\u201d untraceable firearms assembled from a kit, must be registered (Currently, older weapons are exempt)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expanded safe storage law<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher penalties for possessing a &#8220;high-capacity&#8221; magazine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expanding the &#8220;assault weapons&#8221; ban to include guns made before 1994 and those modified to avoid Connecticut\u2019s existing ban<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a lot of gun peddlers out there, are trying to sell these things and trying to work around our system every day,\u201d Gov. Lamont said earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lamont also wants to ban \u201copen carry\u201d for pistols, but one crime victim from Tennessee said a similar law left her defenseless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[The shooter] pulled a .45 from a shoulder holster under his jacket and shot my husband and killing him,\u201d Nikki Goeser of Nashville testified. \u201cI was disarmed and helpless to stop his attack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other critics said Connecticut does a poor job of enforcing existing gun laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/new-poll-majority-of-california-dems-independents-worry-about-being-victims-of-gun-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"legislative-hearing-reached-boiling-point-over-gov-ned-lamonts-gun-control-proposal\" title=\"Legislative Hearing Reached Boiling Point Over Gov. Ned Lamont\u2019s Gun Control Proposal\">New Poll: Majority of California Dems, Independents Worry About Being Victims of Gun Violence<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was a female from Connecticut that was convicted of straw purchasing numerous firearms \u2013 brought them into Connecticut; they were used in crimes,\u201d said Jake McGuigan with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"legislative-hearing-reached-boiling-point-over-gov-ned-lamonts-gun-control-proposal\" title=\"Legislative Hearing Reached Boiling Point Over Gov. Ned Lamont\u2019s Gun Control Proposal\">National Shooting Sports Foundation<\/a> (NSSF), the firearms industry trade association. \u201cBasically, should have had a federal sentence of 10 years. She was given three years&#8217; supervised probation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were heated exchanges during Monday&#8217;s hearing between Judiciary Committee co-chair, State Senator Gary Winfield (D-New Haven), and two conservative lawmakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connecticut&#8217;s present ban on so-called &#8220;assault weapons&#8221; is being contested in court by Doug Dubitsky (R-Chaplin) and Craig Fishbein (R-Wallingford).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It remains uncertain what will become of Lamont&#8217;s proposition. The previous year, he presented several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/connecticut-gov-ned-lamont-drops-kitchen-sink-gun-control-to-cover-for-crime-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"legislative-hearing-reached-boiling-point-over-gov-ned-lamonts-gun-control-proposal\" title=\"Legislative Hearing Reached Boiling Point Over Gov.
