The decision comes just weeks after dozens of wolves were culled in what has been described as the country&#8217;s largest wolf hunt in modern history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conservationists and activists argue that the planned cull is disproportionate to the threat posed by the animals to both livestock and people. They are now calling on the European Union (EU) to take action against Sweden for allegedly violating environmental law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a trophy hunt, just like going to Africa to hunt lions,\u201d said Magnus Orrebrant, the head of <a href=\"https:\/\/rovdjur.se\/stop-trophy-hunting-of-lynx-in-sweden\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-sweden-issues-licenses-for-lynx-hunt-against-conservationist-wishes\" title=\"Sweden Issues Licenses for Lynx Hunt Against Conservationists' Wishes\">Svenska Rovdjursf\u00f6reningen<\/a>, an animal rights advocacy group that has started a Change.org <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/stoppa-trof%C3%A9jakten-p%C3%A5-lodjur-i-sverige-stop-trophy-hunting-of-lynx-in-sweden?utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=custom_url&amp;recruited_by_id=1c39e6b0-a083-11ed-9365-c17d1b8d24cf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-sweden-issues-licenses-for-lynx-hunt-against-conservationist-wishes\" title=\"Sweden Issues Licenses for Lynx Hunt Against Conservationists' Wishes\">petition<\/a> calling for the trophy hunting of lynx to be stopped. \u201cHundreds of foreign hunters come to Sweden for lynx hunting because they think it is exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conservationists have issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fcosc.2023.1080561\/full\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-sweden-issues-licenses-for-lynx-hunt-against-conservationist-wishes\" title=\"Sweden Issues Licenses for Lynx Hunt Against Conservationists' Wishes\">warning<\/a> that the lynx population in Europe could collapse if immediate efforts are not made to protect the animals. Recent tests on lynx in France have revealed that the animals&#8217; genetic diversity is so low that they will likely become locally extinct within the next three decades if no action is taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are an estimated 1,450 lynx in Sweden\u2019s wildlife population, close to 300 fewer than a decade ago. The Swedish hunters&#8217; association, Svenska J\u00e4garef\u00f6rbundet, has admitted that the lynx does not pose a danger to humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The hunt is absolutely not linked to any danger to humans,\u201d&nbsp; said Henrik Falk, an adviser to the association, in a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/mar\/02\/hundreds-of-lynx-to-be-hunted-in-sweden-following-biggest-ever-wolf-cull\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-sweden-issues-licenses-for-lynx-hunt-against-conservationist-wishes\" title=\"Sweden Issues Licenses for Lynx Hunt Against Conservationists' Wishes\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>. \u201cNeither is wolf hunting \u2013 there are no documented cases of wolves attacking humans in Swedish modern times.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falk says, for the hunter, the cull is less about population control and more about the thrill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe lynx hunt is more about the excitement, and for some hunters, of course, the skin is the motivation,\u201d Falk said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sweden, lynxes, like most other game animals, are hunted using dogs. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:01992L0043-20130701&amp;from=EN\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-sweden-issues-licenses-for-lynx-hunt-against-conservationist-wishes\" title=\"Sweden Issues Licenses for Lynx Hunt Against Conservationists' Wishes\">EU Habitats Directive<\/a>, hunting may be allowed either to prevent damage to livestock or in the interests of public safety. However, predator expert Benny G\u00e4fwert from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has raised concerns that neither of these conditions applies to lynx in Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to G\u00e4fwert, it is \u201cstrongly questionable\u201d that either of these conditions applies to lynx in Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/hunt365-antigun-anti-hunting-professors-need-to-go-back-to-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"hunt365-sweden-issues-licenses-for-lynx-hunt-against-conservationist-wishes\" title=\"Sweden Issues Licenses for Lynx Hunt Against Conservationists' Wishes\">Antigun, Anti-Hunting Professors Need to Go Back to School<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do not think the hunters can invoke these exceptions, and we have notified the EU Commission,&#8221;&nbsp; G\u00e4fwert said. \u201cThat hunting occurs, we do not, in itself, have a problem with, but the extent to which it occurs in relation to the low damage caused by the lynx is unwarranted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lynx have historically lived across Eurasia but have recently been put at risk in many countries from habitat loss, inbreeding, poaching and traffic collisions.
