{"id":176595,"date":"2023-03-01T15:26:21","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T20:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=176595"},"modified":"2023-03-01T15:26:21","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T17:44:32","slug":"new-legislation-would-create-a-centralized-database-of-gun-purchasers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/new-legislation-would-create-a-centralized-database-of-gun-purchasers\/","title":{"rendered":"New Legislation Would Create a Centralized Database of Gun Purchasers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"732\" title=\"New Legislation Would Create a Centralized Database of Gun Purchasers\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Background_Check-1024x732.jpg\" alt=\"New Legislation Would Create a Centralized Database of Gun Purchasers\" class=\"wp-image-176596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Background_Check-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Background_Check-400x286.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Background_Check-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Background_Check-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Background_Check.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(<em>Photo: GunsAmerica<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats in Congress this week announced legislation to pave the way for a centralized database of gun owners curated by the government. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.menendez.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/the_gun_records_restoration_and_preservation_act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-legislation-would-create-a-centralized-database-of-gun-purchasers\" title=\"New Legislation Would Create a Centralized Database of Gun Purchasers\">Gun Records Restoration and Preservation Act,<\/a>\u201d the bill would remove existing laws that prevent federal agencies from accessing and compiling gun sales records.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the legislation would repeal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The prohibition on the ATF from releasing firearm tracing data for use by cities, states, researchers, litigants, and members of the public;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The prohibition on consolidating or centralizing records that gun dealers are required to maintain;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The requirement that the FBI destroy all approved gun purchaser records within 24 hours;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The prohibition on the ATF from requiring gun dealers to submit their inventories to law enforcement to enforce the federal law requiring dealers to report the loss or theft of firearms.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor too long, the NRA has had an iron grip on Congressional Republicans \u2013 actively working to keep critical information such as gun records and tracing data out of the public domain, making it that much harder for law enforcement agencies to solve gun crimes, disrupt gun trafficking schemes, and keep our communities safe,\u201d said Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), one of the sponsor&#8217;s of the act.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/how-the-fbi-worked-with-other-federal-agencies-to-strip-citizens-of-2a-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"new-legislation-would-create-a-centralized-database-of-gun-purchasers\" title=\"New Legislation Would Create a Centralized Database of Gun Purchasers\">How the FBI Worked with Other Federal Agencies to Strip Citizens of 2A Rights<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn fact, my GOP colleagues have for years inserted the so-called \u2018Tiahrt Amendments\u2019 in routine spending bills to ensure that gun records and tracing data never see the light of day, and in many cases require the data to be completely destroyed,&#8221; he continued.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is time we repeal these provisions and give our law enforcement access to critical information that can help make our communities safer from the scourge of gun violence,&#8221; Menendez concluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. That is exactly why the Tiahrt Amendment prevents the release of incomplete tracing data,&#8221; said Mark Oliva, NSSF&#8217;s managing director of public affairs in an email. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This legislation has been introduced before and wasn\u2019t moved even when Democrats had control of both chambers of Congress.
