{"id":176074,"date":"2023-02-14T16:15:36","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T21:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=176074"},"modified":"2023-02-14T16:15:36","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T17:27:30","slug":"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FY 2022 Extreme Risk Protective Order and Firearm Crisis Intervention TTA Initiative\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z0-8YPqEMgw?start=13&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Justice Department is doling out over $200 million this year to states and the District of Columbia to support the adoption and implementation of red flag laws under what\u2019s known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/bja.ojp.gov\/program\/byrne-scip\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Red flag laws, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/feinstein-introduces-federal-red-flag-confiscation-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">extreme risk protection order (ERPO)<\/a> programs, allow the government to seize firearms from individuals accused\u2014 not convicted \u2014 of being a danger to themselves or others. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporters believe these laws have the capacity to save lives even though they focus solely on confiscating firearms, and do nothing to prevent the individual from accessing or possessing other potentially deadly \u201cweapons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homicidal individuals, for example, will still have access to edged implements, blunt instruments and automobiles even though they&#8217;ve been red-flagged.\u00a0 Suicidal individuals, for example, will still have access to things like rope, razor blades, and poisonous household chemicals even though they&#8217;ve been red-flagged.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that in 2021 more people were killed with knives and cutting instruments than rifles, per data gathered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/195325\/murder-victims-in-the-us-by-weapon-used\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">Statista Research Dept<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In either case, there\u2019s nothing stopping these individuals from carrying out their violent intentions by other means. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, DOJ leadership believes this is a big win for communities around the country. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Justice Department is working relentlessly to protect communities from violent crime and the gun violence that often drives it, and the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program is an important part of that effort,\u201d said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-announces-over-200-million-investments-state-crisis-intervention\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">press release<\/a> obtained by GunsAmerica.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/doj-publishes-guidance-for-red-flag-confiscation-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">DOJ Publishes Guidance for \u2018Red Flag\u2019 Confiscation Legislation<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese awards will support the kinds of crisis intervention programs that we know save lives and help protect children, families, and communities across the country from senseless acts of gun violence,\u201d Garland added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco was equally sanguine about the impact of ERPO schemes. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Department of Justice\u2019s strategy to reduce violent crime and gun violence includes prioritizing support for successful, evidence-based programs,\u201d said Monaco. \u201cThe grants announced today invest in and highlight proven state and local violence prevention and intervention programs, that will make our communities safer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding for this initiative was approved via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/biden-signs-bipartisan-safer-communities-act-with-help-from-these-15-gop-senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022<\/a>, the first significant gun control legislation passed by Congress in nearly three decades. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As noted in previous GunsAmerica <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/feinstein-introduces-federal-red-flag-confiscation-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">articles<\/a>, there is no definitive evidence to suggest that red flag laws are effective, broadly speaking.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosanna Smart, a Rand Corp. economist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/research\/gun-policy\/analysis\/extreme-risk-protection-orders.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">examined<\/a> various studies of red flag laws and found \u201cvery inconclusive\u201d evidence that they decrease overall firearm suicide or homicide rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s strongly one way or another,\u201d Smart told <a href=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/news\/article\/red-flag-gun-laws-get-another-look-after-indiana-colorado-shootings\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\"><em>KHN.org<\/em> <\/a>back in April of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the rollout of red flag laws across the U.S. is imminent, especially now that there are federal dollars available (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.everytown.org\/solutions\/extreme-risk-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"doj-announces-200-million-spend-on-red-flag-laws\" title=\"DOJ Announces $200 Million Spend on Red Flag Laws\">19 states already<\/a> have ERPO programs on the books).
