No one uses an AR-15 to protect their families against an intruder. Illinois state Rep. Bob Morgan (D) doesn\u2019t believe that law-abiding citizens use modern sporting rifles for self-defense.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo one uses an AR-15 to protect their families against an intruder,\u201d Morgan wrote on Twitter last week.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAssault weapons like the ones we saw mow down our friends on the 4th, or recently, East Garfield Park, aren\u2019t used for protection, they’re designed for one purpose: to kill as many people as quickly as possible,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rep. Morgan is wrong, of course.\u00a0 Americans do, indeed, use modern sporting rifles to protect their homes and their families.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Users on Twitter were quick to point to numerous stories, some documented by mainstream media, where good guys used AR- and AK-pattern firearms for home defense. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn’t appear that Rep. Morgan has retracted his statement nor has he responded to those who replied on Twitter. Maybe because acknowledging the truth would undermine his political agenda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Morgan’s actively pushing a bill <\/a>he’s sponsored known as House Bill 5855<\/a>. It would ban so-called \u201cassault weapons\u201d and \u201chigh-capacity magazines\u201d (any magazine over 10 rounds) as well as bump stocks and other devices that increase the rate of fire of a semiautomatic weapon.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per the bill, citizens currently in possession of modern sporting rifles would be allowed to keep them but they\u2019d be forced to register them with the state police at a cost of $25 per firearm.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HB 5855 would also prohibit the issuance of Firearm Owner\u2019s Identification (FOID) cards to adults under 21.\u00a0 Adults 18, 19, and 20 years of age would essentially lose their 2A rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A House committee has already held several hearings on HB 5855. When state lawmakers return from holiday recesses they’re expected to take it up again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even if Morgan succeeds and ultimately gets his bill through the Legislature, gun-rights groups will be ready with lawsuits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m here to tell you that the gun owners are tired of being blamed for every madman, every criminal, and every other depraved act that 2.5 million gun owners didn’t do,\u201d former NRA lobbyist Todd Vandermyde told MyJournalCourier<\/a>.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd we’re not here to negotiate. I’m here to tell you that if House Bill 5855 or anything remotely like it passes, we will see you in court,” he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
