{"id":171219,"date":"2022-11-30T11:01:17","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T16:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=171219"},"modified":"2022-11-30T11:01:17","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T12:16:47","slug":"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\/","title":{"rendered":"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we talk about ways to reduce violent crime and murders, certainly empowering citizens to exercise their 2A rights is at the top of the list, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/boingboing.net\/2022\/11\/27\/36-months-after-george-floyds-murder-police-reform-finally-considered-in-minnesota.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">engaged community policing <\/a>and a justice system that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/why-george-soros-is-responsible-for-the-largest-spike-in-murder-in-american-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">actually holds criminals accountable.<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Dr. John Lott Jr., the president of the nonprofit Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC),&nbsp;believes there is another way to deter violent individuals from harming others: the death penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2022\/11\/at-the-washington-times-if-you-want-to-deter-murders-bring-back-the-death-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\"> op-ed<\/a> in <em>The Washington Times,<\/em> Lott along with pro-2A supporter Nikki Goeser, made their case to bring back capital punishment because as of right now, while 32 states have inmates on death row, only eight and the federal government have held executions since 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Amidst the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/11\/29\/gun-death-rates-highest-levels-00071285\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">high murder rate<\/a> of the last couple of years, it is little wonder that Americans support the death penalty by at least a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/07\/19\/10-facts-about-the-death-penalty-in-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">3-to-2 <\/a>margin. And their support would rise to more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/platinum\/econ_crosstabs\/november_2022\/crosstabs_death_penalty_october_16_17_2022\/(source)\/emailalert\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">2-to-1<\/a> if death sentences were carried out on a more timely basis,&#8221; they write. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the people who are most in favor of the death penalty are the people most likely to be victims of violent crime.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The strongest support for the death penalty comes from those with the lowest incomes and education \u2014 those who are most likely to be victims of crime. Conversely, the strongest opposition comes from those who make over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/platinum\/econ_crosstabs\/november_2022\/crosstabs_death_penalty_october_16_17_2022\/(source)\/emailalert\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">$200,000 per year <\/a>and have graduate school educations,&#8221; they note. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/mississippi-lawmakers-consider-bringing-back-firing-squads\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">Mississippi Lawmakers Consider Bringing Back Firing Squads<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And as it relates to the deterrence effect, Lott and Goeser explain, &#8220;Most peer-reviewed academic research shows a large deterrence effect, ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1707911975?ref_=sr_1_1&amp;crid=2PYQ4HPEPWQN0&amp;keywords=more%252520guns%252520less%252520crime&amp;qid=1636267088&amp;sprefix=More%252520Guns%252520L,aps,238&amp;sr=8-1&amp;pldnSite=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">eight<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/studies-death-penalty-discourages-crime\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">eighteen<\/a> fewer murders for each additional execution.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if it legitimately deters criminals and it has public support from the most at-risk of becoming victims of violent crime, why aren&#8217;t we using it more often?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, some argue that the<a href=\"https:\/\/deathpenaltyinfo.org\/news\/records-disclose-taxpayers-picked-up-a-nearly-million-dollar-price-tag-for-each-federal-execution\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\"> high cost <\/a>of condemning a murderer to death is not worth it.  It takes almost 20 years of legal wrangling and sometimes millions of dollars before a convicted offender is finally put down.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though, Lott and Goeser note that there are cost benefits to having capital punishment on the table.  That is, more killers are likely to take a plea bargain to avoid facing the chair or the needle, which in turn saves taxpayer dollars by avoiding a protracted trial and subsequent appeals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/the-manson-family-murders-helter-skelter-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">The Manson Family Murders: Helter Skelter, Part 2<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the philosophical argument known as Blackstone&#8217;s ratio, &#8220;It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer.&#8221;  The last thing society would want to do is execute an innocent man or woman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But perhaps this dilemma can be avoided altogether when one&#8217;s guilt is not only beyond a reasonable doubt but certain.  Mass killers who confess to their crimes, for example.  Or, brutal murderers caught on camera and ID&#8217;ed by witnesses.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In such cases where guilt is not in question, it would seem appropriate to fast-track these killers to the chair or the needle, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/mississippi-lawmakers-consider-bringing-back-firing-squads\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"should-we-use-the-death-penalty-more-often\" title=\"Should We Use the Death Penalty More Often?\">firing squad<\/a>.  Would it not?  What are your thoughts?  Is Dr. Lott right?
