Gallup this week released the results of its poll<\/a> on gun control conducted Oct. 3-20. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the question of whether one wants laws covering the sale of firearms to be made more strict, less strict, or kept the same, pollsters observed that 57% of Americans wanted them to be made more strict, 10% less strict, and 32% believed they should be kept the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in June, Gallup found that 66% of Americans wanted them to be made more strict, but that poll was conducted in the wake of the mass killings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York when emotions were at high. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Gallup observed about the trends: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Americans’ calls for stricter gun laws have fallen since June, when back-to-back massacres in a grocery store and a school resulted in an increased appetite for gun control. This pattern, whereby public support for tougher gun control spikes after prominent mass shootings and falls back as the memory of them fades, has been evident historically in Gallup polling.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Gallup also inquired about household gun ownership. Thirty-three percent of Americans said they personally own a gun and 46% admitted to having a gun in their home or elsewhere on the property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s interesting about the gun ownership trends from Gallup is that they seem to not fully account for the COVID-19 pandemic gun boom when millions of Americans, from all walks of life, purchased firearms for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, the firearms industry trade association, estimates<\/a> that there were 4.5 million first-time gun buyers in 2021, and 8.4 million in 2020. That’s almost 13 million new gun owners! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considering that there are approximately 200 million adults in the U.S<\/a>., one would expect those percentages in the Gallup poll to reflect at least a 6-7 percent increase in gun ownership by 2022 when compared to 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that’s not what Gallup is reporting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Oct. of 2019, Gallup found that 29% of Americans personally owned a gun. In Oct. of 2020, it jumped to 32% and then strangely ticked down to 31% in 2021 — again, in the face of a discernible spike in first-time gun buyers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What gives? Perhaps not everyone is willing to confess to a Gallup pollster that they are exercising their 2A rights to keep and bear arms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gallup does caution that the “margin of sampling error is \u00b14 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.” So, maybe those numbers do check out with a 4 percentage point bump due to the margin of error: 33% + 4% (for margin of error) = 37% in 2022 compared to 29% in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
