{"id":170549,"date":"2022-11-15T17:33:16","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T22:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=170549"},"modified":"2022-11-15T17:33:16","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T16:39:40","slug":"city-leaders-in-columbus-flouting-state-law-to-ram-through-gun-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/city-leaders-in-columbus-flouting-state-law-to-ram-through-gun-control\/","title":{"rendered":"City Leaders in Columbus Flouting State Law to Ram Through Gun Control"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Columbus city leaders announce new legislation addressing gun violence\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j2zHTR-58g4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of Columbus, Ohio, is attempting to enact gun control in spite of the fact that only the state legislature has the power to regulate firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, city leaders unveiled a sweeping proposal to, as they see it, \u201creduce gun violence.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday we are taking local action to reduce gun violence in Columbus,\u201d said Andrew Mayor Ginther in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbus.gov\/Templates\/Detail.aspx?id=2147503071\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"city-leaders-in-columbus-flouting-state-law-to-ram-through-gun-control\" title=\"City Leaders in Columbus Flouting State Law to Ram Through Gun Control\">press release<\/a> obtained by GunsAmerica. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery person in every neighborhood deserves to be safe,\u201d he continued.&nbsp; \u201cThese proposed new laws bolster the work of the Comprehensive Neighborhood Safety Strategy and get more guns out of the hands of those who misuse them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The package would do all of the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ban magazines with a capacity exceeding 30 rounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place limits on ammunition purchases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mandate gun safety locks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGun violence plagued Columbus\u2019 neighborhoods in 2017, yet the Statehouse handcuffed responsible local officials, preventing them from enacting the most basic gun safety laws. We are proud to stand with Mayor Ginther and City Attorney Klein to put forth specific steps to reduce the number of guns on the street and keep our neighborhoods safe,\u201d said City Council President Hardin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned, city leaders do not have the power to enact municipal gun laws under the state&#8217;s preemption statute. And the Ohio Supreme Court has already ruled on it. This is yet another attempt by the City of Columbus to override state law and pass gun control laws they have no right to pass,&#8221; the BFA said in a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.10tv.com\/article\/news\/local\/city-leaders-announce-new-legislation-addressing-gun-violence\/530-a7c5ef01-4661-414b-bd75-d483644d1f6a\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"city-leaders-in-columbus-flouting-state-law-to-ram-through-gun-control\" title=\"City Leaders in Columbus Flouting State Law to Ram Through Gun Control\"><em>10tv.com<\/em>.<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The city ran a study not so long ago that showed where most of the violence is coming from in the city, so what are city officials doing about that? Why do they insist on passing laws that affect the law-abiding and which criminals will never obey? Why don&#8217;t they focus their efforts on the real criminals?&#8221; BFA continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The whole idea of having statewide preemption regarding firearms is to provide a consistent set of laws throughout the state, rather than a patchwork of laws that will entrap and confuse people and infringe on their Second Amendment rights,&#8221; BFA concluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GunsAmerica reached out to Alan Gottlieb, the founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, for comment.  Gottlieb also believes Columbus city leaders will lose in the end.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The city of Columbus is clearly prohibited by state law from passing and enforcing this gun law,&#8221; he told GunsAmerica via email.  &#8220;The state of Ohio will win their lawsuit and Columbus will lose.
