Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot is calling on politicians to enact a statewide ban on modern sporting rifles following a drive-by shooting on Halloween night in Garfield Park that left as many as 14 people injured, including three children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Last night’s shooting reminds us that there are too many weapons of war available to criminals,” Lightfoot wrote on Twitter. “We must have a statewide ban and I urge the legislature to act.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Details are still emerging and the investigation is ongoing to determine the motive of the attack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities are asking the public to come forward with any information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe know it\u2019s a drive-by. We know it happens in just a few seconds,\u201d said Police Superintendent David Brown said at a news conference this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt begins and then it\u2019s over, about three seconds the car is pulling out after driving by and shooting randomly, really, into the crowd,” added Brown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suppose, for a moment, that mayor Lightfoot got her wish, and the state broadly banned “weapons of war,” does anyone really believe that gangsters and drug dealers in the city would immediately stop doing drive-by shootings? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course not! Lightfoot’s call to action is nothing more than window dressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best way to stop drive-bys is to put and keep violent offenders behind bars, something her administration has failed to do consistently, according to Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Criminals run around\u00a0knowing that they have the mayor\u00a0at their side, that Lori\u00a0Lightfoot is willing to stand up\u00a0and enable them to be as lawless\u00a0as they want,” Lopez told Fox News<\/em><\/a> in June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Going back for the\u00a0last two years when she first\u00a0allowed the righteous protesters\u00a0to come down and destroy the\u00a0city of Chicago and in every\u00a0step since she has tried to\u00a0deflect and divert attention\u00a0from her failed policies that\u00a0have led to Chicago the most\u00a0American of American cities, a\u00a0global city, to be run into the\u00a0ground under her leadership,” Lopez continued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crime is up over 35% this year compared to last year, in the Windy City. Yet, despite this shocking stat, mayor Lightfoot is seeking a raise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a “management ordinance” put before the City Council on Wednesday, Lightfoot proposed to give whoever holds the position of mayor a raise tied to the rate of inflation or 5 percent, whichever’s less, according to NBCChicago<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lightfoot currently rakes in $209,915 per year. If the ordinance is approved, she’d make $216,210 starting May 22 of 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving forward, there would be a bump in pay every year that would max out at 5 percent. There is an opt-out clause if the acting mayor feels that the raise isn’t warranted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
