Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.), and GunsDownAmerica, an activist gun control group with links to far-left Washington, D.C., think tanks, are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/08\/28\/gabby-giffords-gun-control-groups-ask-major-credit-cards-flag-gun-ammo-purchases\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\"><strong>supporting an<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>effort<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to have credit card companies create special purchasing codes for firearms and ammunition. That\u2019s also a position that\u2019s being pushed by several New York state lawmakers and Amalgamated Bank, a union-owned bank that\u2019s also helped finance the Democratic National Committee and Political Action Committees including Biden-Harris Democrats, Ready for Hillary (which is Hillary Clinton\u2019s Super PAC), U.S. Sen Elizabeth Warren\u2019s (D-Ma.) Warren Democrats and U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi\u2019s (D-Calif) PAC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Corporate Big Brother<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Amalgamated Bank\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/for-profit\/amalgamated-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\"><strong>bills itself<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as a \u201csocially-responsible\u201d bank that\u2019s got over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ir.amalgamatedbank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\"><strong>$7.7 billion<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in assets and nearly $59 billion under management, much of which is tied to union pension funds. Amalgamated Bank&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/dozens-of-ny-lawmakers-want-mastercard-american-express-to-flag-suspicious-gun-store-purchases\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\"><strong>sent<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>a request<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;to create the special Merchant Category Codes (MCC) to the International Organization for Standardization in 2021. That request and an appeal were rejected. Another request was made this year and a decision is pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea is coming from a bank that refuses business with any in the firearm industry. Amalgamated Bank\u2019s idea is that bureaucratic businesses would not just monitor who exercises their Constitutionally-protected Second Amendment rights, but also how much and how often an individual chooses to do so. They bill it as a way to help law enforcement identify individuals who might commit horrific atrocities and intervene before they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond the Law<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>What it really is is privatized gun control that runs roughshod over rights and the law. The 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act forbids the federal government from maintaining a gun registry. Banks are already required to report suspicious activity under the 1970&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fincen.gov\/resources\/statutes-and-regulations\/bank-secrecy-act\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\"><strong>Banking Secrecy Act<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and expanded with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/PLAW-107publ56\/pdf\/PLAW-107publ56.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\"><strong>Patriot Act<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;This idea, though, would put that into private hands, building a registry one purchase at a time. The basis for suspicious activity would simply be exercising the pre-existing right to keep and bear arms, which is expressly protected by the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New York state lawmakers are interested in the idea. Over four dozen anti-gun lawmakers signed a letter to credit card companies MasterCard and American Express urging them to adopt unique MCCs for firearms and ammunition. Currently, they are listed as \u201cspecialty retailers\u201d or \u201csporting goods.\u201d The problem is that guns are purchased for sporting use. Some are purchased for self-defense. Many firearms are used for multiple purposes \u2013 including self-defense, recreational shooting sports and hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rejected Before<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea isn\u2019t new. A public pressure campaign was attempted in 2018. New York Times columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin floated the same notion in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/the-new-york-times-wants-to-direct-americas-banks-on-what-they-should-do-to-hurt-your-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\">February<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/new-york-times-proposes-credit-card-monitoring-gun-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\">December<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of 2018. Visa and MasterCard both\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/12\/24\/new-york-times-track-gun-credit-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\">rejected<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the proposals then, adding that monitoring and arbitrating the private purchases of their customers \u201csets a dangerous precedent.\u201d Visa told\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2018\/03\/09\/visa-refuses-to-cut-ties-with-semiautomatic-rifle-manufacturers\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\">Breitbart<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in 2018, \u201cWe do not believe Visa should be in the position of setting restrictions on the sale of lawful goods and services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Gun industry puppets like Larry Keane will come up with every reason not to save lives from gun violence. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/c4y9JgHJZf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\">pic.twitter.com\/c4y9JgHJZf<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Giffords (@GiffordsCourage) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GiffordsCourage\/status\/1564401766975815681?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\">August 29, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote> \n\n\n\n<p>The idea that capturing credit card purchase data to assist law enforcement isn\u2019t the answer. Dumping data on law enforcement of law-abiding citizens only creates an information morass. It is garbage data when law enforcement has already missed bona fide tips that would have prevented these tragedies. The FBI&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/press-releases\/fbi-statement-on-the-shooting-in-parkland-florida\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\">admitted<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;it missed taking action on two tips before the tragedy in Parkland, Fla. The murderer in Buffalo, N.Y., was&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/05\/15\/1099009422\/buffalo-shooting-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\">brought in by state police<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;after making threats, yet authorities there took no action even after his own family took away his firearms. The murderer in Uvalde, Texas,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/07\/17\/uvalde-shooter-warnings-background\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"gun-control-activists-pushing-credit-card-companies-to-flag-firearm-ammo-purchases\" title=\"Gun-Control Activists Pushing Credit Card Companies to Flag Firearm, Ammo Purchases\"><strong>posted threats<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;against schools and fellow classmates, yet none were reported to police. And, the murderer in Highland Park was on the radar of law enforcement, yet the local police did not share the information with the Illinois State Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea isn\u2019t about improving public safety. This proposal is about freezing gun purchases and getting corporate entities to skirt federal laws.
