{"id":168000,"date":"2022-08-30T10:32:51","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T14:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=168000"},"modified":"2022-08-30T10:32:51","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T09:25:13","slug":"school-board-in-iowa-will-allow-staff-to-carry-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/school-board-in-iowa-will-allow-staff-to-carry-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"School Board in Iowa Will Allow Staff to Carry on Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEWS: Iowa Schools Approve Concealed Firearms For Campus Staff, Local Leader Says &quot;Children Are Worth Protecting&quot; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/88UOrOx8wO\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"school-board-in-iowa-will-allow-staff-to-carry-on-campus\" title=\"School Board in Iowa Will Allow Staff to Carry on Campus\">pic.twitter.com\/88UOrOx8wO<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NRA (@NRA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NRA\/status\/1564414645187788802?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"school-board-in-iowa-will-allow-staff-to-carry-on-campus\" title=\"School Board in Iowa Will Allow Staff to Carry on Campus\">August 30, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote> \n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A school board in Iowa is looking to harden its campus by allowing certain staff members to discreetly carry firearms during the school year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spirit-lake.k12.ia.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"school-board-in-iowa-will-allow-staff-to-carry-on-campus\" title=\"School Board in Iowa Will Allow Staff to Carry on Campus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spirit Lake Community Schools<\/a>\u00a0voted unanimously, 4-0, on Monday to allow 10 staff members, excluding teachers, to bear arms in an effort to deter and stop active shooters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a school district, we have an obligation to protect our students and staff from a possible active shooter situation,&#8221;\u00a0Spirit Lake Community School Superintendent Dr. David Smith\u00a0said in a statement obtained by the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2022\/08\/24\/iowa-school-spirit-lake-staff-concealed-carry-guns-protect-shootings\/7884759001\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"school-board-in-iowa-will-allow-staff-to-carry-on-campus\" title=\"School Board in Iowa Will Allow Staff to Carry on Campus\">Des Moines Register<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Having this policy in place serves as a deterrent for anyone who might consider entering our schools with the intent to do harm,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The superintendent will choose each of the 10 candidates for the program.  They will undergo 40 hours of training administered by a local sheriff.  Once they&#8217;ve successfully completed the training, they will remain anonymous and carry firearms purchased by the district.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We know when these events occur, most victims fall within the first few minutes,&#8221; Smith explained. &#8220;We have determined the right action to take is to give trained staff members the opportunity to stop a killer as soon as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/biden-says-he-is-determined-to-ban-assault-weapons-following-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"school-board-in-iowa-will-allow-staff-to-carry-on-campus\" title=\"School Board in Iowa Will Allow Staff to Carry on Campus\">Biden Says He Is \u2018Determined to Ban Assault Weapons\u2019\u00a0Following Midterms<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This latest action is designed to augment safety measures currently in place, such as locked doors, security cameras, mental health support, and the school resource officer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The district will also continue to utilize its comprehensive safety plan, provide staff and students with age-appropriate training, and review other safety measures that add additional layers of security to its facilities,&#8221; noted Smith.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While school shootings are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/cbs-poll-shows-growing-hysteria-over-mass-school-shootings-despite-their-rarity\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"school-board-in-iowa-will-allow-staff-to-carry-on-campus\" title=\"School Board in Iowa Will Allow Staff to Carry on Campus\">statistically rare events and less common than they were in the &#8217;90s<\/a>, any policy that puts armed responders on site to help stop active killers has the potential to save lives.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campus carry shouldn&#8217;t be controversial.
