Knife fight!\u201d as he charged the victim.   \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grove had noticed the suspect shortly before, lurking around his car, and was therefore on high alert when he saw him coming, reports <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox19.com\/2022\/08\/11\/i-had-fend-my-life-amazon-driver-recalls-shooting-attacker-middletown\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"amazon-driver-deactivated-after-shooting-knife-wielding-attacker\" title=\"Amazon Driver 'Deactivated' After Shooting Knife-Wielding Attacker\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fox19<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI raise my firearm, and I\u2019m trying to tell him \u2018Stop! Stop!\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u2018Knife fight! Knife fight!\u2019 And he\u2019s looking at me, got these bugged-out eyes, and he\u2019s coming at me close,&#8221; Grove told the local <em>Fox News<\/em> affiliate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AMAZON DRIVER RECALLS FIRING IN SELF-DEFENSE AT MIDDLETOWN MAN WITH KNIFE\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tRNZIenwVFw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Police say that the attacker was possibly under influence of a substance at the time of the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the perp kept running toward Grove, he let a round loose at the threat.  It hit Roberts in the leg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cObviously, [The victim] was in fear. So in defense of himself, he was able to discharge a firearm,\u201d\u00a0Middletown Chief of Police David Birk told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnem.com\/video\/2022\/08\/09\/amazon-driver-acted-self-defense-when-shooting-knife-wielding-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"amazon-driver-deactivated-after-shooting-knife-wielding-attacker\" title=\"Amazon Driver 'Deactivated' After Shooting Knife-Wielding Attacker\">WNEM<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grove says that even after the shot was fired, Roberts did not stop running at him. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Oh my goodness, this did not work on this man, he\u2019s still coming, he has a knife in his hand, I\u2019m about to get gutted out here.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/david-chipman-couldnt-define-assault-weapons-to-senate-can-for-gun-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"amazon-driver-deactivated-after-shooting-knife-wielding-attacker\" title=\"Amazon Driver 'Deactivated' After Shooting Knife-Wielding Attacker\">David Chipman Couldn\u2019t Define \u2018Assault Weapons\u2019 to Senate, Can for Gun Control<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrified, Grove says while all of this was happening, all he wanted was to survive so he could see his family again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The attacker did leave the scene without Grove having to fire an additional shot.  Police found the suspect in a creek after he apparently tried to enter a sewer.  Officers needed to taser Roberts before he could be handcuffed, according to reports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roberts was taken to a hospital and treated for his gunshot wound.  But the drug-addled suspect didn&#8217;t stay for long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Roberts got up and walked out of the hospital, Chief Birk said, \u201cHim walking away from the hospital kind of helped clarify the situation that the Amazon driver was just defending himself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roberts was again picked up by the police and taken to another hospital. He is now being charged with felony assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about it later, Grove said he was afraid for his life, \u201cI had to fend for my life at that moment, because that guy was attacking me with a knife. He came at me with a knife. If I didn\u2019t have my firearm, I wouldn\u2019t be here today. I know that for a fact. I would not be here today. My family would have been planning a funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Grove luckily survived unscathed, many delivery drivers are not so lucky.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/xtown.la\/2020\/09\/03\/delivery-driver-crime-los-angeles\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"amazon-driver-deactivated-after-shooting-knife-wielding-attacker\" title=\"Amazon Driver 'Deactivated' After Shooting Knife-Wielding Attacker\">xtown.la<\/a>, the number of crimes committed against delivery workers has increased. Just from 2019 to 2020 there&#8217;s been a 56% spike, with at least 20% of those crimes being violent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Grove is not being charged for his lawful use of force, Amazon has \u201cdeactivated\u201d him as a delivery driver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usacarry.com\/amazon-driver-deactivated-shooting-man-knife-self-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"amazon-driver-deactivated-after-shooting-knife-wielding-attacker\" title=\"Amazon Driver 'Deactivated' After Shooting Knife-Wielding Attacker\">USA Carry<\/a> found a screenshot of Amazon\u2019s policy, which states that delivery workers are not permitted to carry weapons.
