{"id":167292,"date":"2022-08-04T13:08:11","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T17:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=167292"},"modified":"2022-08-04T13:08:11","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T08:48:46","slug":"flashy-preacher-w-checkered-past-demands-nyc-gun-permit-after-robbery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/flashy-preacher-w-checkered-past-demands-nyc-gun-permit-after-robbery\/","title":{"rendered":"Flashy Preacher w\/ Checkered Past Demands NYC Gun Permit After Robbery\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NYC minister back preaching a week after robbery\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ECv4RDY_QE8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A Brooklyn preacher is calling on city and state leaders to give clergy members frictionless access to gun permits after becoming the victim of a recent robbery. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a Friday press conference, Bishop Lamor Miller-Whitehead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lotichurches.org\/about-l-o-t-i-c\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"flashy-preacher-w-checkered-past-demands-nyc-gun-permit-after-robbery\" title=\"Flashy Preacher w\/ Checkered Past Demands NYC Gun Permit After Robbery\u00a0\">Leaders of Tomorrow International Church<\/a> made his plea. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They need to pass a law expeditiously that pastors of houses of worship \u2014 anyone on the ecclesiastical staff \u2014 need to be able to have permits for firearms,&#8221; he said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/adams-rejects-gun-permit-plea-nyc-bishop-robbed-jewels-mid-sermon\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"flashy-preacher-w-checkered-past-demands-nyc-gun-permit-after-robbery\" title=\"Flashy Preacher w\/ Checkered Past Demands NYC Gun Permit After Robbery\u00a0\"><em>Fox Digital<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;If the teachers can have it, we should be able to have it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller-Whitehead, who spent five years behind bars for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/04\/nyregion\/lamor-whitehead-bishop-robbed.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"flashy-preacher-w-checkered-past-demands-nyc-gun-permit-after-robbery\" title=\"Flashy Preacher w\/ Checkered Past Demands NYC Gun Permit After Robbery\u00a0\">felony conviction related to identity theft<\/a>, believes that despite his criminal record those with a privileged access to grace should have the right to keep and bear arms for self-defense outside the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;No matter if we have a record, it should be exempt,&#8221; Miller-Whitehead explained. &#8220;So we should be able to bear arms as the Constitution says.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New York City Mayor Eric Adams was asked about Miller-Whitehead\u2019s request. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Do you think it\u2019s a good idea that like clergy should get a special dispensation when it comes to gun permits?&#8221; a reporter asked the mayor on Monday during a press conference about expanding the city\u2019s speed camera program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Mayor Adams said, with a chuckle.\u00a0 Mayor Adams is apparently a longtime friend of Miller-Whitehead.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bishop was robbed while recording an online sermon on July 24.&nbsp; Three masked men held Miller-Whitehead at gunpoint and made off with over $1 million in jewelry. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with calling on city and state leaders to step in, Miller-Whitehead made an appeal to President Biden. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m calling on every elected official that has power to protect houses of worship,&#8221; the bishop said. &#8220;We need protection. We need you to sympathize with us. We don\u2019t get the luxury of having firearms. All we\u2019re asking is help us protect ourselves. Pass a law where we can carry our firearms, because this gun violence has gone to a new level.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/texas-father-shoots-would-be-carjackers-saves-children-inside-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"flashy-preacher-w-checkered-past-demands-nyc-gun-permit-after-robbery\" title=\"Flashy Preacher w\/ Checkered Past Demands NYC Gun Permit After Robbery\u00a0\">Texas Father Shoots Would-Be Carjackers, Saves Children Inside Vehicle<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in June, the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/breaking-supreme-court-rules-nys-restrictive-concealed-carry-scheme-is-unconstitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"flashy-preacher-w-checkered-past-demands-nyc-gun-permit-after-robbery\" title=\"Flashy Preacher w\/ Checkered Past Demands NYC Gun Permit After Robbery\u00a0\">struck down New York\u2019s restrictive \u201cmay-issue\u201d concealed carry standard<\/a> that required citizens to provide to the state a \u201cproper cause\u201d on why they needed to exercise their 2A rights. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This \u201cproper cause\u201d scheme was used by state officials to arbitrarily deny permits to ordinary New Yorkers, thus, in effect, creating a \u201cno-issue\u201d standard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the Supreme Court\u2019s decision, Gov. Kathy Hochul immediately passed new gun laws that work to keep the de facto \u201cno-issue\u201d standard in place, including requirements that an applicant: display \u201cgood moral character,\u201d disclose their social media accounts, have in-person interviews with law enforcement, provide character references, and undergo 18 hours of training. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun Owners of America <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/goa-and-gof-sue-new-york-over-new-concealed-carry-restrictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"flashy-preacher-w-checkered-past-demands-nyc-gun-permit-after-robbery\" title=\"Flashy Preacher w\/ Checkered Past Demands NYC Gun Permit After Robbery\u00a0\">has already sued Gov.
