Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives will not vote on a bill to ban so-called \u201cassault weapons,” at least for now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After discussing the matter in a closed-door meeting on Wednesday, Left-leaning lawmakers recognized they didn\u2019t have enough support to pass the \u201cH.R. 1808 Assault Weapons Ban of 2022<\/a>\u201d before the upcoming August recess, according to a report by Politico<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, credited gun owners for stepping up and speaking out to stop the vote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe gun ban vote being stopped from a vote this week is because many House democrats have felt the pressure from grassroots gun owners,” said Gottlieb in an email to GunsAmerica. “The House switchboard have been lit up. Gun owners need to keep the pressure on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

News of the delay triggered gun-control activist David Hogg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If you want to see an act of political suicide this is it,” Hogg posted on Twitter. “Gun violence is the top voting issue for undecided voters. This bill is not going to be brought up in August- there will always be another “bigger” issue. This is 1000% bs and foolish.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s not clear what poll or survey Hogg is referring to when he said “gun violence is the top voting issue for undecided voters.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The economy is the top issue, at least according to a recent DesertNews poll<\/em><\/a>. Twenty-four percent of respondents said the “economy” was the most important issue for the November midterms compared to 12 percent who said, “gun control\/protecting 2A,” which would suggest that it’s the aggregate category, accounting for voters on both sides of the gun divide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unrelated report<\/a> by NPR<\/em> also indicated that the economy, specifically concerns about inflation, was the number one concern for voters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, support for banning so-called “assault weapons” has hovered around 50 percent, according to Gallup<\/em><\/a> polling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historically, there has never been an overwhelming public demand to outlaw modern sporting rifles (MSRs), despite what Hogg would have his followers on Twitter believe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complicating matters further for gun-control activists, like Mr. Hogg, is that there are now more than 24 million AR- and AK-pattern rifles in circulation<\/a>, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearms industry trade association. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To put things in perspective, the NSSF noted that there are more<\/strong><\/a> MSRs in circulation today than there are Ford F-Series trucks on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a truly significant figure that demonstrates \u2013 again \u2013 the popularity of this commonly-owned style of rifle,\u201d said NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi. \u201cThe firearm industry responds to market demand and this shows that during the elevated period of firearm sales that began in 2020, this particular style of rifle is the top choice for law-abiding citizens for hunting, recreational shooting and self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the relative ubiquity and popularity of MSRs, it will continue to be an uphill battle for those who seek to ban them. That said, they’ll never stop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
