After his release, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Nightline\/video\/john-hinckley-jr-speaks-gun-ownership-mental-illness-86263394\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"there-are-too-many-guns-in-america-says-the-man-who-shot-president-reagan\" title=\"'There are too many guns in America' Says The Man Who Shot President Reagan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interviewed by Juju Chang<\/a> for <em>ABC&#8217;s<\/em> &#8220;Nightline.&#8221;   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the interview, Hinckley expressed his opinions about guns in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I certainly don&#8217;t think the mentally ill should have access to guns.  I mean that&#8217;s kind of obvious,&#8221; Hinckley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Background checks are good, and waiting periods are good,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think there are too many guns in America,&#8221; Hinckley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Dabbs on Hinckley: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/reagan-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"there-are-too-many-guns-in-america-says-the-man-who-shot-president-reagan\" title=\"'There are too many guns in America' Says The Man Who Shot President Reagan\">Just Like Romeo and Juliet, But Crazy<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hinckley was 25 years old when he attempted to assassinate President Reagan outside of the Washington Hilton Hotel on March 30, 1981.  He was reportedly driven by a desire to impress actress Jodie Foster, who was a teenage movie actress at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also injured during the attack was White House Press Secretary James Brady.  Brady was seriously wounded and paralyzed as a result.  Brady&#8217;s injuries led to the enactment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/rules-and-regulations\/brady-law#:~:text=On%20November%2030%2C%201993%2C%20the,handgun%20to%20an%20unlicensed%20individual.\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"there-are-too-many-guns-in-america-says-the-man-who-shot-president-reagan\" title=\"'There are too many guns in America' Says The Man Who Shot President Reagan\">Brady Law<\/a> which was passed by Congress in 1993 and imposed a waiting period and increased background checks for gun purchasers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/mlb-pitcher-says-2a-without-license-is-stupid\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"there-are-too-many-guns-in-america-says-the-man-who-shot-president-reagan\" title=\"'There are too many guns in America' Says The Man Who Shot President Reagan\">MLB Pitcher Says 2A Without License is \u2018Stupid\u2019 and \u2018Protection Isn\u2019t a Good Enough Reason to Get a Gun\u2019<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hinckley was charged with 13 crimes and was found not guilty by reason of insanity.  He was committed to St. Elizabeth&#8217;s Hospital in Washington, DC until 2016 when he was granted permission to live with his mother in Virginia under court supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 15, Judge Paul L.
