{"id":165432,"date":"2022-06-22T11:03:21","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T15:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=165432"},"modified":"2022-06-22T11:03:21","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T07:31:20","slug":"senate-agrees-on-gun-control-bill-with-enough-votes-to-enact-into-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/senate-agrees-on-gun-control-bill-with-enough-votes-to-enact-into-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate Agrees on Gun Control Bill With Enough Votes To Enact Into Law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Upcoming Gun Control Is WORSE Than Just Red Flag Laws\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aGgWEOLQZAs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a procedural vote on Tuesday, the U.S. Senate agreed to the first major gun control package in nearly 30 years. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By a vote of 64 to 34, the upper chamber gave the green light to what\u2019s known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.murphy.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/bipartisan_safer_communities_act_text.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senate-agrees-on-gun-control-bill-with-enough-votes-to-enact-into-law\" title=\"Senate Agrees on Gun Control Bill With Enough Votes To Enact Into Law\">Safer Communities Act\u201d (SCA<\/a>). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 14 Republicans backing the SCA, it has enough support to override a filibuster led by pro-gun lawmakers. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The threshold to break a filibuster in the Senate is 60 votes which means that if no one changes their vote between now and when the SCA goes to the floor for the official vote, it will clear the Senate and then head to the House for consideration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/greitens-under-fire-for-rino-hunting-permit-campaign-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senate-agrees-on-gun-control-bill-with-enough-votes-to-enact-into-law\" title=\"Senate Agrees on Gun Control Bill With Enough Votes To Enact Into Law\">Greitens Under Fire for \u2018RINO Hunting Permit\u2019 Campaign Ad<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) already indicated that the upper chamber will \u201cmove to final passage as soon as possible,\u201d which could be by week\u2019s end, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/senate-advances-bipartisan-gun-control-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"senate-agrees-on-gun-control-bill-with-enough-votes-to-enact-into-law\" title=\"Senate Agrees on Gun Control Bill With Enough Votes To Enact Into Law\">Fox News<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is eagerly awaiting its arrival.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;After the Senate passes this bill, the House will swiftly bring it to the Floor so that we can send it to President Biden\u2019s desk,\u201d Pelosi said in a statement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Gun groups were quick to go on the offensive, panning the Safer Communities Act as nothing more than a way to chill the 2A rights of responsible citizens.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NRA will support legislation that improves school security, promotes mental health services, and helps reduce violent crime,\u201d said the nation\u2019s gun lobby in a statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, we will oppose this gun control legislation because it falls short at every level. (<em>Photo: GOA<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, Gun Owners of America criticized the bill, saying it would \u201cencourage Backdoor Universal Background Checks by redefining many private sellers as gun dealers, financially incentivize states to enact unconstitutional \u2018red-flag\u2019 laws, and would allow for so-called \u2018enhanced background checks,\u2019 which are arbitrary delays in transferring firearms to adults not yet 21 years-old.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the list of the 14 Republicans who are backing the SCA:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky<\/li><li>Sen.
