Phil Scott of Vermont signed a gun-control bill this week that extends the time between a delayed NICS background check and when a prospective buyer can take possession of a firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under federal law, a licensed gun dealer can legally transfer a firearm if the FBI has not made a background check determination within three business days. Under <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.vermont.gov\/bill\/status\/2022\/S.4\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"republican-governor-signs-gun-control-bill-in-compromise-with-anti-gun-lobby\" title=\"Republican Governor Signs Gun Control Bill in 'Compromise' With Anti-Gun Lobby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S.4<\/a>, which was signed by Scott on March 25, a gun dealer in the state must wait an additional four business days before they can transfer the firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott had previously vetoed a bill that would have given the FBI an unlimited amount of time to return a delayed background check, but signed this bill as part of a \u201ccompromise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/gov-phil-scott-vermont-gun-control-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"republican-governor-signs-gun-control-bill-in-compromise-with-anti-gun-lobby\" title=\"Republican Governor Signs Gun Control Bill in 'Compromise' With Anti-Gun Lobby\">\u2018Traitorous\u2019 Gov. Phil Scott Catches Hell While Signing Vermont Gun Control Bills<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhenever the governor vetoes any measure, he always tries to, in the spirit of compromise, offer a path forward,&#8221; Scott\u2019s press secretary, Jason Maulucci, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevendaysvt.com\/OffMessage\/archives\/2022\/03\/25\/scott-signs-first-new-gun-control-measure-since-2018?media=AMP+HTML\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"republican-governor-signs-gun-control-bill-in-compromise-with-anti-gun-lobby\" title=\"Republican Governor Signs Gun Control Bill in 'Compromise' With Anti-Gun Lobby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local media<\/a>. &#8220;If the legislature follows that path, regardless of the political pressure, he honors his word and signs it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These and similar bills are justified by the so-called \u201cCharleston loophole.\u201d In 2015, a mass murderer and white supremacist tried to purchase a handgun even though he was federally barred from owning one. The gun was transferred to him anyway due to a failure by both local and federal officials to properly investigate the murderer\u2019s background within the three-day window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anti-gun advocates claim that giving the FBI an unlimited amount of time to \u201ccomplete\u201d a background check will prevent these kinds of situations. They often fail to acknowledge that many of these delayed background checks are not due to criminal histories but mistaken identities and other administrative errors. Scott has caved to the anti-gun lobby. In 2018, Gov. Scott signed a series of gun control measures to outlaw private gun sales, raise the legal age to buy a gun to 21, and ban the sale of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Gov. Scott said the Parkland massacre caused him to \u201chave a change of heart\u201d about gun rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI recognize how hard it is for some to understand my change of heart on our gun laws, let alone come to the same conclusion I\u2019ve reached \u2014 and that many who voted for me are disappointed and angry,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI understand I may lose support over the decision to sign these bills today, and those are consequences I\u2019m prepared to live with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott won the gubernatorial election in 2020 and will be up for reelection in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">***<a href=\"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/\" campaign=\"BuySellGA_Register\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\">Buy and Sell on GunsAmerica!<\/a>***<\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Gov.
