{"id":160970,"date":"2022-03-16T10:53:14","date_gmt":"2022-03-16T14:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=160970"},"modified":"2022-03-16T10:53:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T04:14:52","slug":"sheriff-urges-public-to-seek-training-constitutional-carry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/sheriff-urges-public-to-seek-training-constitutional-carry\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheriff Urges Public to Seek Professional Training Following Passage of Constitutional Carry\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Ohio Sheriff is urging the public to seek professional training following the passage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/alabama-ohio-become-22nd-23rd-state-to-enact-constitutional-carry\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sheriff-urges-public-to-seek-training-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Sheriff Urges Public to Seek Professional Training Following Passage of Constitutional Carry\u00a0\">state\u2019s new constitutional carry law<\/a>,\u00a0 known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/legislation-summary?id=GA134-SB-215\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sheriff-urges-public-to-seek-training-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Sheriff Urges Public to Seek Professional Training Following Passage of Constitutional Carry\u00a0\">SB 215<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a Tuesday post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DarkeCountySheriff\/posts\/327435052751099\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sheriff-urges-public-to-seek-training-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Sheriff Urges Public to Seek Professional Training Following Passage of Constitutional Carry\u00a0\">Facebook<\/a>, Darke County Sheriff Mark E. Whittaker argued that even though the state no longer mandates professional training, one should still seek it out.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs your Sheriff, and a firearms owner, I am also an advocate of responsible and safe firearms handling,\u201d wrote Whittaker.&nbsp; \u201cI continue to encourage all firearms owners, new or seasoned to consider attending firearms courses for safety and proficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the state\u2019s shall-issue concealed carry standard, one is required to complete an 8-hour safety course to obtain a \u201cCertificate of Competency\u201d as part of the permitting process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Ohioans 21 and older can still apply for a permit to secure reciprocity rights with other states, they no longer need a permit to carry concealed under the new law which takes effect on June 13 of this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Darke County Sheriff\u2019s Office will continue to provide concealed handgun licensing to those who choose to obtain a license just as we have been for the last several years,\u201d noted Whittaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe benefit to obtaining an Ohio Concealed Handgun License would be the ability to carry a concealed handgun in other states which Ohio has reciprocity agreements.\u00a0 A lack of a license may not permit you to carry in other states,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/alabama-ohio-become-22nd-23rd-state-to-enact-constitutional-carry\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"sheriff-urges-public-to-seek-training-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Sheriff Urges Public to Seek Professional Training Following Passage of Constitutional Carry\u00a0\">Alabama, Ohio Become 22nd &amp; 23rd State to Enact Constitutional Carry!\u00a0<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In his post, sheriff Whittaker asked another favor of his constituents.\u00a0 That they cooperate with law enforcement when it comes to disclosing whether they have a firearm on their person. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the old law, during an interaction, the onus was on the citizen to tell the officer that he was armed. \u00a0 SB 215 removed that requirement.\u00a0 Now the citizen does not have to volunteer that information unless they are directly asked. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would also ask that if you are carrying a weapon on you, and find yourself in an interaction with law enforcement, that you voluntarily inform the officer as soon as possible for everyone\u2019s safety,\u201d said Whittaker.&nbsp; \u201cUnder the new law, if a law enforcement officer asks if you are carrying a handgun you must answer the officer truthfully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sheriff ended by saying he hopes the expansion of carry rights in the Buckeye State helps to keep criminals in check. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt remains to be seen what impact the law will have on crime.
