Andrew Gounardes (D-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Pat Fahy (D-Albany) unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.nysenate.gov\/pdf\/bills\/2021\/s8415\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-lawmakers-want-to-impose-excise-tax-on-ammo-to-fund-gun-violence-research\" title=\"NY Lawmakers Want to Impose Excise Tax on Ammo to Fund Gun Violence Research\">S. 8415,<\/a> which would tax the retail sale of ammo at the following rates:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>(a) Ammunition that contains a single projectile that measures .22 caliber or less sold at retail shall be taxed at a rate of two cents per projectile.<\/em><\/li><li><em>(b) All other ammunition other than that specified in paragraph (a) of this subdivision and sold at retail shall be taxed at a rate of five cents per projectile.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill also allows the commissioner to adjust the rate to \u201cmaintain a consistent effect relative to inflation.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawmakers said the tax will help generate revenue for a newly created gun violence \u201cresearch institute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally, the research institute was supposed to have funds directed to it \u201cvoluntarily by taxpayers with an optional contribution,\u201d as <em>Spectrum News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/central-ny\/ny-state-of-politics\/2021\/11\/09\/gun-violence-research-institute-approved-by-hochul\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-lawmakers-want-to-impose-excise-tax-on-ammo-to-fund-gun-violence-research\" title=\"NY Lawmakers Want to Impose Excise Tax on Ammo to Fund Gun Violence Research\">noted<\/a> back in Nov. of 2021. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it appears that Sen. Gounardes and Assemblywoman Fahy want to force law-abiding gun owners to fund this burgeoning anti-gun think tank. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"see-also-veteran-new-york-firefighter-nabbed-for-buying-80-percent-receivers-in-first-interstate-task-force-sting\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/veteran-new-york-firefighter-nabbed-for-buying-80-percent-receivers-in-first-interstate-task-force-sting\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-lawmakers-want-to-impose-excise-tax-on-ammo-to-fund-gun-violence-research\" title=\"NY Lawmakers Want to Impose Excise Tax on Ammo to Fund Gun Violence Research\">Veteran New York Firefighter Nabbed for Buying 80 Percent Receivers in First Interstate Task Force Sting<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we seek to address New York\u2019s rise in gun violence, it\u2019s incumbent on us as legislators to identify fact-based approaches that will save lives and bring peace to our communities,&#8221; Gounardes said. &#8220;By taxing ammunition, we are fairly funding research that will help us build smart and effective policies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about gun violence prevention and community-based policies that help to interrupt cycles of violence, resources matter,\u201d Fahy added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy directing revenue generated off of the sale of ammunition in New York to gun violence research and addressing its root causes, we\u2019re putting resources where they\u2019re most effectively used and protecting more New Yorkers from the scourge of gun violence,\u201d he continued. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"new-study-small-group-of-known-criminals-driving-crime-not-law-abiding-gun-owners\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/new-study-small-group-of-known-criminals-driving-crime-not-law-abiding-gun-owners\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-lawmakers-want-to-impose-excise-tax-on-ammo-to-fund-gun-violence-research\" title=\"NY Lawmakers Want to Impose Excise Tax on Ammo to Fund Gun Violence Research\">New Study: Small Group of Known Criminals Driving Crime (Not Law-Abiding Gun Owners!)<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alan Gottlieb, the founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, blasted this latest effort by politicians to chill the 2A rights of law-abiding citizens.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The power to tax is the power to destroy,&#8221; said Gottlieb in an email to GunsAmerica, &#8220;and that is what they want to do to our Second Amendment right to own and use firearms.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Johnson, manager of Armageddon Arsenal Supply in LeRay, explained to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwnytv.com\/2022\/03\/04\/up-arms-over-proposed-ammunition-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-lawmakers-want-to-impose-excise-tax-on-ammo-to-fund-gun-violence-research\" title=\"NY Lawmakers Want to Impose Excise Tax on Ammo to Fund Gun Violence Research\"> WWNY TV News<\/a> how it would affect .22LR specifically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdding 2 cents to something that\u2019s only 2.7 cents, you literally just about doubled your cost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quite a diabolic scheme these two Dems cooked up.  Force responsible gun owners to pay for a new bureaucracy that&#8217;s sole purpose is to publish junk research that paves the way for more incremental civil disarmament.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.nysenate.gov\/pdf\/bills\/2021\/s8415\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ny-lawmakers-want-to-impose-excise-tax-on-ammo-to-fund-gun-violence-research\" title=\"NY Lawmakers Want to Impose Excise Tax on Ammo to Fund Gun Violence Research\">S. 8415<\/a> has been referred to a Senate committee.
