{"id":160515,"date":"2022-03-03T13:41:19","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T18:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/?p=160515"},"modified":"2022-03-03T13:41:19","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T03:55:18","slug":"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gunsamerica.com\/digest\/ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio is poised to become the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitutional_carry#:~:text=As%20of%20June%2016%2C%202021,a%20permit%20to%20carry%20a\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!\">22nd state<\/a> to recognize one\u2019s right to keep and bear arms the way the founders and framers intended.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/search-prod.lis.state.oh.us\/solarapi\/v1\/general_assembly_134\/bills\/sb215\/EN\/05\/sb215_05_EN?format=pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!\">Senate Bill 215<\/a>, a constitutional carry bill, cleared both chambers this week, 57-35 in the House, and 24-8 in the Senate. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Per<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journal-news.com\/local\/ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry-gun-bill\/K54WFUMOVFG6RLVCSUCUARIOEQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!\">Journal-News<\/a><\/em>, the bill has three provisions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A person at least 21 years old who is otherwise legally allowed to have a gun can carry it concealed without a permit, without having to take the now-required eight hours of gun safety training.<\/li><li>Holders of a current concealed-carry permit no longer have to carry that license with them.<\/li><li>If stopped by police, a person with a concealed weapon no longer has to tell officers about it unless they\u2019re specifically asked.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are at a historic moment in Ohio legislative history,\u201d said the Buckeye Firearms Association, one of the pro-gun groups that backed the bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the closest we\u2019ve ever been to passing a bill to make the licensing process optional for concealed carry of a firearm,&#8221; continued BFA. &#8220;Bills have been presented in former legislative sessions, but have not advanced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not every gun owner in the Buckeye State is thrilled with the news.  Firearms instructor Kim Rodecker objected to it, arguing that mandatory training prevents accidents and saves lives.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"see-also-research-constitutional-carry-does-not-result-in-higher-murder-or-violent-crime-rates\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/research-constitutional-carry-does-not-result-in-higher-murder-or-violent-crime-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!\">Research: Constitutional Carry Does Not Result in Higher Murder or Violent Crime Rates<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s good at all,\u201d Rodecker, who owns <a href=\"https:\/\/concealedcarrycourses.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!\">Concealed Carry Courses of Cleveland<\/a>, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkyc.com\/article\/news\/politics\/ohio-house-passes-bill-eliminate-concealed-carry-permit-requirements\/95-9f704ecd-b1ab-49c7-8fd5-6c3a49544fcc\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!\">WKYC<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like if you have a 16-year-old who wants to learn how to drive. Would you just throw him the keys and the book, and say, here, go teach yourself? It\u2019s just as stupid,\u201d he said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have trained so many people that they wouldn\u2019t take the class if they don\u2019t have to. They\u2019d make a mistake and that mistake could cost somebody their life,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/research-constitutional-carry-does-not-result-in-higher-murder-or-violent-crime-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!\">research<\/a> looking at rates of violent crime, police killings, and firearm homicide in the aftermath of the passage of constitutional carry laws, conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2022\/02\/responding-to-gvpedias-claims-about-constitutional-carry-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"ohio-lawmakers-pass-constitutional-carry\" title=\"Ohio Lawmakers Pass Constitutional Carry!\">Crime Research Prevention Center<\/a>, indicates there were no statistically significant changes to any category.  Moreover, the murder rate actually dropped.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics of permitless carry may argue that the issue still warrants further examination, particularly as it relates to accidental shootings and instances of negligent discharge, but the notion that SB 215 will be an existential danger to public safety is nonsense.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s outrageous and frustrating that our lawmakers are ignoring law enforcement\u2019s vocal opposition to permitless carry and continue to push through this dangerous bill,\u201d Kristine Woodworth, a volunteer with Moms Demand Action in Ohio, said in a press release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Gutting permitting requirements will put our communities, and the people whose job it is to keep us safe, in danger,&#8221; she insisted.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, this is nonsense.  As Dean Rieck BFA&#8217;s Executive Director explained, &#8220;What we\u2019re trying to do is allow Ohioans to exercise their constitutional rights without that burden\u2026 No other constitutional right requires you to jump through that many hoops.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is not a novel concept,\u201d he added. \u201cThose states haven&#8217;t had any big problems with this. We don&#8217;t think Ohio is going to have any problems either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine will now have the option to sign or veto SB 215.
