Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Ed Markey (D-MA) penned a letter last week urging the video-sharing platform to censor certain producers and channels over so-called \u201cghost gun\u201d content. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe write to express our serious concern that YouTube continues to host videos that instruct viewers on how to make and manufacture ghost guns,\u201d the letter began.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis content is a clear and direct violation of YouTube\u2019s existing Community Guidelines on firearms, which provide that \u2018[c]ontent intended to . . . instruct viewers on how to make firearms, ammunition, and certain accessories or instruct viewers on how to install those accessories is not allowed on YouTube,\u2019\u201d&nbsp; it continued. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"see-also-newsom-goes-on-the-offensive-against-gun-industry-pushing-legislation-to-bankrupt-firearm-makers\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/newsom-goes-on-the-offensive-against-gun-industry-pushing-legislation-to-bankrupt-firearm-makers\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lawmakers-youtube-instructing-it-to-censor-gun-related-content\" title=\"Lawmakers Pen Letter to YouTube Instructing It to Censor Gun-Related Content\u00a0\">Newsom Goes on the \u2018Offensive\u2019 Against Gun Industry, Pushing Legislation to Bankrupt Firearm Makers&nbsp;<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we acknowledge and appreciate that YouTube has engaged with congressional staff about this problem and, in recent weeks, removed some of these videos, we are alarmed that an extensive amount of this dangerous content still exists on YouTube,\u201d they stated. \u201cIt appears that the steps that YouTube has taken thus far are insufficient.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been well documented that concerns over \u201cghost guns\u201d are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/commentary\/homemade-firearms-ghost-guns-legislation-pennsylvania-20220208.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lawmakers-youtube-instructing-it-to-censor-gun-related-content\" title=\"Lawmakers Pen Letter to YouTube Instructing It to Censor Gun-Related Content\u00a0\">greatly exaggerated<\/a>.&nbsp; Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atf.gov\/file\/154586\/download\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lawmakers-youtube-instructing-it-to-censor-gun-related-content\" title=\"Lawmakers Pen Letter to YouTube Instructing It to Censor Gun-Related Content\u00a0\">the ATF<\/a>, from 2016 through 2020, less than 2 percent of firearms used in homicides or attempted homicides nationwide were homemade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gunsamerica.com\/digest\/department-of-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lawmakers-youtube-instructing-it-to-censor-gun-related-content\" title=\"Lawmakers Pen Letter to YouTube Instructing It to Censor Gun-Related Content\u00a0\"> inmate surveys detailing how criminals obtain firearms<\/a> indicate that the vast majority secure them via illegal means, for example, the black market, straw purchasers, theft. \u00a0Homemade firearms were not a popular source, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/library\/publications\/source-and-use-firearms-involved-crimes-survey-prison-inmates-2016\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"clickTracking\" campaign=\"lawmakers-youtube-instructing-it-to-censor-gun-related-content\" title=\"Lawmakers Pen Letter to YouTube Instructing It to Censor Gun-Related Content\u00a0\">2016 survey by the Bureau of Justice Statistics<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also worth noting that existing federal law bans prohibited persons \u2014 felons, drug dealers, mental defectives, fugitives from justice, among others \u2014 from even possessing a firearm, let alone building one at home. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even given those facts, Blumenthal and his colleagues would have us believe that by censoring lawful activity by responsible citizens on YouTube we will somehow prevent criminals from getting guns and committing crimes.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Oliva, director of public affairs for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, took umbrage with this misguided line of reasoning. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not enough that Sen. Blumenthal wants to deny law-abiding Americans their Second Amendment rights. Now, he\u2019s taking aim at their First Amendment rights,\u201d noted Oliva in an email to GunsAmerica.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSen. Blumenthal shows once again that he\u2019s working for radical, special-interest gun control groups and not for the law-abiding American taxpayers,\u201d he continued.&nbsp; \u201cIt\u2019s clear the senator prefers to only chooses to defend those parts of the Constitution he finds politically expedient for his donor base and not the rights specifically enumerated as belonging to The People, not overbearing government officials.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawmakers conclude the letter by asking YouTube to respond to a series of questions and to do &#8220;more to ensure that the content it hosts does not exacerbate the threat of ghost guns.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is YouTube could unilaterally shut down all its 2A-related content tomorrow and it wouldn&#8217;t make one bit of difference.  For starters, there are plenty of other online platforms that host gun-related content.  But more fundamentally, homemade guns don&#8217;t commit crimes.
