Robert Francis \u201cBeto\u201d O\u2019Rourke is backpedaling as fast as he can from his infamous vow to confiscate lawfully owned guns from American citizens as he tries to secure the governor’s mansion in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less than four months after he doubled-down on his gun confiscation scheme in an interview with the Texas Tribune<\/a><\/em>, the hapless politician told an East Texas crowd this week that he\u2019s \u201cnot interested\u201d in taking anyone\u2019s firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not interested in taking anything from anyone. What I want to make sure that we do is defend the Second Amendment,\u201d he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then pivoted to criticize Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for supporting constitutional carry. O\u2019Rourke has said<\/a> he will repeal constitutional carry if elected governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to make sure that we protect our fellow Texans far better than we\u2019re doing right now. And that we listen to law enforcement, which Greg Abbott refused to do. He turned his back on them when he signed that permitless carry bill that endangers the lives of law enforcement in a state that\u2019s seen more cops and sheriff\u2019s deputies gunned down than in any other,\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a few days after the event, he took to Twitter to reiterate his stance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of Texans shot to death has gone up EVERY single year under Abbott. 4,164 Texans in 2020 alone.

How does Abbott respond? By signing a dangerous law that makes it easier for criminals to carry a loaded gun in public.

During a Democratic presidential debate in 2019, O\u2019Rourke made headlines when he vowed to confiscate AR-15\u2019s and AK-47\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to allow it to be used against fellow Americans anymore.\u201d The O’Rourke campaign immediately began using the clip to sell merchandise<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

As recently as November of 2021, O\u2019Rourke told the Texas Tribune<\/em><\/a> that he \u201cwon\u2019t be backing down from his message on guns\u201d and \u201cpeople shouldn\u2019t have access to assault rifles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think most of us also understand that we should not have military-style weapons used against our fellow Texans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s unclear whether Abbott will be the Republican candidate in this year\u2019s Texas gubernatorial election, O\u2019Rourke is unlikely to knock off whoever the GOP selects. He already lost a statewide Senate race to Sen. Ted Cruz, and polls<\/a> show him trailing Abbott by 15 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of that dislike is doubtless related to O\u2019Rourke\u2019s stance on guns. In the months following his \u201cHell yes\u201d statement, O\u2019Rourke claimed to be reaching out to gun owners, who he said supported his confiscation policies. But an investigation by GunsAmerica<\/a> revealed that O\u2019Rourke lied and exaggerated about those conversations, and he appeared ignorant of even the most basic firearm laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
